NH: Students wearing empty holsters made a professor "upset," said Dean.

The "Active Shooter" policy was enacted specifically to head off calls for concealed carry on campus. It is a political ploy, and pretty nakedly cynical. What those who don't own guns wont get is that this is a direct threat, saying to gun owners, "don't even try it, 'cause we'll shoot you, too." They assume the masses are too dumb to catch that, and they're right.

EXACTLY.

Why do they have this "active shooter" policy? Because students are unarmed. Why are they kept unarmed? because of the "active shooter" policy. Why do they have this "active shooter" policy? Circular.

Waaaaiiiit a second...are you trying to say that there's some circular reasoning going on here?  Because -- and this is quite a leap, I know -- that's kind of what I'm taking from your post.   ::)  >:D  ;D

David

That is an interesting reasoning you have there Ryan, I'll umm, have to umm, pick it apart sometime. Or another.   ;)  There has to be a corner in that reasoning somewhere.   ^-^

The instant the killer is stopped, an "active shooter" situation no longer exists.

When I was a student at UNH, I wrote a blog entry about the University's firearms policy here. http://defenderofliberty.blogspot.com/2006/02/to-serve-and-protect-i-dont-think-so.html  It actually starts about half way down this blog entry with the bold text.  I originally came up with the idea of an empty holster protest and shared it with others via facebook and participated in it during the first empty holster protest.  When a UNH cop saw my empty holster, he and several other cops surrounded me and harassed me, but after speaking with them for a couple minutes, they let me go on my way.  The idea was originally brewed up here.  http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=2209825481&topic=1784  I'm glad that others took the idea and ran with it.

I guess it's going to take someone willing to follow NH law and carry on campus, risk getting a bogus illegal arrest, and then taking it to court.  Only question is if the courts will ignore the law or not that forbids UNH from banning ccw when the trial is underway?

Right. A protest won't make them realize what they're doing contravenes New Hampshire's firearms law, because they already have their own legal analysis that says it doesn't. Civil disobedience, hopefully followed by a favorable court decision, however, will.

ReverendRyan

It's UNH policy, not law. I like Daves' idea for civ dis on this one - open carry trash pickup or other event on campus. The only "crime" being committed by non-students would be trespassing if not leaving when asked.

J’raxis 270145

If said civdis was done by students, the trespass threat couldn't get in the way. But we'd have to find students willing to do this.

ReverendRyan

The problem is that could amount to expulsion, and severe difficulty getting admitted to another school. So I doubt it will happen.

But I've been meaning to get ahold of whoever's organizing SCCC at UNH anyway, so I'll get his thoughts when I do.

QuoteUNH Deputy Police Chief Paul Dean said he met with one student who wore an empty holster on the UNH campus Monday. That student applied for the necessary protest permit in advance and, by simply wearing the empty holster in class, made a professor "upset," said Dean.

"I wanted to make sure (the student's) voice was not silenced by not going about it the right way," said Dean.

An NRA member and hunter who has had a gun since he was "a kid," Dean said he supports the Second Amendment and students' rights to protest, but not the intended outcome of the SCCC. Dean said trained officers, not unskilled students, should respond to any campus emergency.

Aww, diddums.

Sean Kranish, who was a student at Rock Valley College, and was arrested by security for wearing an empty holster as a statement for the citizens' right to carry firearms (access the website http://icarry.org), will be the featured speaker at tonight's meeting of the Rockford Area Libertarians, Thursday, May 1, 7pm in the banquet room at Villa Di Roma Restaurant, 11th Street and Harrison Avenue.

Anyone interested is welcome for friendly political conversation. Please arrive early if you would like to order food.

Nice strawman he's got there. No one's proposing that students "respond to campus emergencies," but that they be allowed to carry for self-defense. (Such could be considered a subset of "responding to an emergency," but calling it such is disingenuous.)
