I believe NJ has the cheapest gas prices in the US.  Perhaps something to do with the short distance between the refineries and the consumer?

Anyway, here in the Seacoast the price was in the $3.70's for regular today.  I'm considering getting a high-MPG (80-ish) scooter with a big trunk for groceries and other smallish items I regularly buy.

I went to the store yesterday to buy cooking oil. I ended up coming home without any. The price has quadrupled.

As far as cooking oil goes, you can also render the fat pretty easily from the meats you buy and use that. It saves on having to buy oil, and does pretty much the same job, unless you want to deep fry something.

Regular gas was $3.95 here today. Here's a book I picked up a couple of years ago. It's worth it's weight in Ethanol. It's full of pictures of the author actually building the still. Very, very easy to do.

Having them here in NJ certainly helps. Once the oil comes off the boat it is only coming about 35 miles to me as gas. Our state gas taxes aren't as high as our neighbors either. My sisters live on either side of the Delaware river. When I go visit them I never buy gas in PA. It is always 20 cents or so more than here in NJ, and that is self-serve. Here in NJ everything is full serve.

We have looked into getting a scooter for my wife, but the roads here, not to mention the drivers, are not scooter friendly. I see maybe one scooter per year. We all had mopeds when I was a kid, but they seem to have fallen from favor here as well. Don't know why since they were great fun.

Yeah, we don't need to eat or drive our cars.  :P

I don't need some gooberment/mafia indicator to tell me the money is worthless. $100's spend like $20's used to.

I bought a 15 gallon aluminum pot 4 years ago for 39.99. AI bought the same pot at the same store last week for 79.99. My memory is not that good, I left the price sticker on.  ;D

The dollar is DONE.

aluminum + food = alzheimers, dude

Not yet but if I have to I will. I'll re-clean the tanks of course this time with hot water in my pressure washer. The fire dept. guys stopped by today as I was doing an installation and they recommend ammonia in the water.

I've got a solar distiller, my whole house filter then the Big Berkey. Overkill is better than me kill.

I know every time I go anywhere it costs more and more, I just stay home most of the time.  Why is cooking oil such a big deal?  I read and heard that some stores are limiting rice, wheat, and cooking oil.

I took Rick's truck out yesterday, (sometimes I go out), and as I was at the gas pumps, my eyes just about popped out of my head over the amount vs. price.  I was bitching constantly and said, "why should anyone have sex anymore, every time we go to the damn gas station we're being fucked."   Excuse my language but that's what I said.  $90 to fill it up, eeerrrr!

Lloyd Danforth

Last year when I was fooling with biodiesel, I priced cubes of cooking oil at BJ.  They were about 13 bucks.  Now they are 33$

MengerFan

I realized I am going to spend over $1300 in gas for PorcFest.  >:(

So I was trying to put all of economics training to use this weekend to figure out the gas situation. After realizing that the U.S. gets only a small fraction of its oil from the middle east and that the U.S. is the only possible customer of its major suppliers (Canada, Mexico, Venezuala, and a couple others), I am completely flummoxed. Other than inflation, does anyone have any clue what is going on? I realize there are multiple government policies which stand in the way getting the cheap oil available and building new more efficient refineries, but that doesn't explain any of the recent increase in price.

Oil futures are based on investors perception of future supply/demand situations.

MengerFan

Obviously, but what is causing the perception? Is it totally bogus? Should we all be selling oil futures short?
