Since some of you seemed to have missed the prior announcement...

Updates and the occasional video can be found here.

That strange building you saw is a VOR (VHF Omnidirectional range).  It is used by pilots
for instrument navigation.  Almost all aircraft have a radio receiver which will allow them
to determine the bearing to that particular site.

Cool, good luck on your hike.  I wanted to an AT thru hike a few years ago.  I ended up in Scotland hiking around for 3 weeks and had just as much for to relieve myself of all the stress that made me want to do an AT hike.  Still wouldn't mind doing it some day, but the cost (lost work, etc) is too great.

very cool, error and it sounds like fun.

keep us posted with pics and stuff...and especially reflect on some things you think about as you disconnect from the modern world and get back in touch with Mother Earth. For many people it is a great way to find out who you really are.

Have fun and be safe out there.

It's really cool that you are hiking the trail.  When I am in the woods off the beaten path I almost forget all that is wrong with the world and I can relax. I like to graze on wild raspberries and blueberries.
Maybe that whole hunter gatherer thing is a good trait to hang onto.  You will always remember your trip, it was on my list of things to do...then job, kids, and the B.S. of life intervened. Good for you to do it.

Thanks for the well wishes. I'm back with an update!

Great, that's the section of Trail coming up next. Too bad so much of the Trail passes through federal lands or I'd strongly consider open carrying, even if other hikers don't like it.

John Edward Mercier

Not sure what the other hikers would think... but the muggers wouldn't like it.

There's a lot of hoplophobia among the hikers I've met, though I've met plenty of gun owners, Ron Paul supporters, etc.

The criminal muggers might not like it, but they'd just leave you alone.

It's the government muggers who ban firearms in national parks (including the AT) that you have to worry about.

There's actually a proposed change in regulations which would allow carry in national parks and wildlife refuges, subject to state law in the state where the park is located. The bureaucrats are accepting comments until June 30.

Yep, I know about the proposed CFR change, and have submitted a comment.

NPS isn't doing that out of a change of heart, though. A group of about 30 senators told them to change the regulation, or the law would soon make it clear that they couldn't ban guns.
