I finally (even though I said a few months ago I was going to) quit smoking

I tried a few months ago, a lot of you gave me tons of support so when I started again I felt ashamed to admit it on here, sorry.

My son happily crushed my last pack this morning.

I am having a few pyscho, (sp?), episodes mainly towards Rick for little things he does that really, really irk me and today it just feels like more of  a big deal. I keep reminding myself of the yucky cigarette smell, my throat feels better already, I"m just very edgy.

I do have nicorette gum, I know I should go cold turkey but I don't have the willpower and I do have a wicked bad temper sometimes so I only chew it when I feel like I'm going nuts not every 1 to 2 hours like they tell you to. If anybody wants to quit and use nicorette, even though I think if you can do it cold turkey is better, their new flavor fruit chill is good!  Oh yeah, I also bought chiclets, because it's the only gum I can find without nutrasweet or splenda in it. I plan on chewing that more than the nicorette gum.

Anyways I am absolutely positive I will succeed this time so I guess that's as peppy as I'm going to get today!  At least I will keep myself busy and finally get the house clean too.

Congrats on that. I quit over a year ago, my wife still smokes and I've not regretted the choice since then.

I found personally that my smoking was more habit that addiction. I'd suggest putting those chicklets in places where you normally drop a cigarette pack. For me, it was to the side of my keyboard and the passenger seat of my car. When I instinctually reached for the pack, it was different and began breaking the association. My replacement for a while was Wint-O-green Life Savers. :)

Having chatted with a lot of other smokers, I've found one common theme though; you won't quit smoking unless you really want to. I knew the health risks when I started smoking, so "being healthier" wasn't incentive enough to quit. You have to want to NOT smoke more than you want the buzz of a cigarette. That came for me when I was coughing uncontrollably and it's why I was able to give it up so abruptly and successfully.

Thanks and congrats to you !  That's funny that you suggest a place to put the chiclets because I guess I automatically did put them where "the pack" used to go anyway.  I also bought the same kind of life savers as you did for when my jaw starts to hurt from chewing.  I just have to remember where I put them and hide them from the kids.

I quit nasty cigs 20 years, cold turkey after smoking 2-3 packs a day.

I occasionlly smoke a pipe though. Some days puff 1-2 bowls and sometimes I go a week without even smoking a bowl. It is more of a relaxing hobby than addiction. btw real pipe smokers do not inhale (kinda like Clinton huh?..lol)

I often give people a cheap corncob pipe and some baccy if they want to quit smoking and I encourage them to try it.

Good luck Rainey. Keep busy and stay focused...pretty soon the smell of cigs will make you barf.

rainey, a few words of advice, perhaps?

For the next three weeks, despite what Morgan Spurlock says you're in it for a good deal longer than the three day hump:

1. Don't consume any alcoholic beverage for at least five weeks.
2. Stay away from the computer as much as possible. Find something better to do with your hands.
3. If you feel a homicidal twitch coming on, or a bitching session about to ensue, remember that it is your addiction, and so it is your suffering to endure. Fill a bottle with water, and wear yourself out jogging or walking.
4. Finally, remember and remember well, that addiction is slavery. Keep this thought ping-ponging in your mind at all times during your trial, and in the end, if you succeed, you'll prove a great deal to yourself, and strengthen yourself in ways that simply kicking the habit won't provide. Good luck, girl. :icon_pirat:

Way to go, rainey! It's been 8 years for me. My way to finally do it was I promised my boys I would never smoke again. I don't use the word 'promise' lightly.

GGD. *Explode* Don't say that! That was me two years ago, with a practical winter growth and no visible piercings. This summer, I've got a skunkhawk (virgin snow white mo, black 10 sides) and enough metal inserted into the fleshy parts of my head to serve as a mobile MetroPCS antenna for the entire DFW metroplex.  :icon_pirat:

I don't know how you did it but that's excellent!  Ha, ha the Clinton thing was a good one!  Thanks Kola!

I always love advice, thanks!  I hardly ever drink anymore so that one should be easy.  I quit smoking a few years ago for 7 mths ,  everything was great until I opened a bottle of Bud, then I "needed" a cigarette to go with the beer.

I'm surprised that I've been doing so well at the computer today usually the computer is a trigger for me.  I am going to have to keep myself busy for the next few days though.  It's weird it seems like after day 2 it gets worse and I want a cigarette even more.

Thanks for all of the excellent advice!

My profile has been messed up for a couple of weeks so I don't know if you put an icon/smiley up  as a response to my post or just quoted me and left the rest of the page blank because I cant see a smiley if someone puts them up for one of my post.

I just wanted to let you know in case and so now you'll know.  I miss the simleys so bad, I wish I could find a way to fix my profile.  I can't even see my own avatar.
