we were talking about this sort of thing the other day .... it seems anything connected to government wants you to pledge allegiance to the US

The pledge should start "I pledge no allegiance to any man or king."

A statement of ones principles is a good reminder of where you stand. To outright pledge no allegiance leaves no doubt as to where you stand. Without self-agrandizing, a pledge to one's own moral code could be worth iterating.
