Quandary: ATF vs. Blackwater

Wow... who do you root for when it's ATF versus Blackwater?

Blackwater wanted to buy authentic (full auto) AK-47s for training, but federal law prohibits transferring automatic arms made after May 1986 to any private person or company. Because of the ban, pre-'86 samples are ridiculously expensive, often 50-100 times their free market value.

"No problemo," sez Blackwater. "We'll just, ummm, donate some AKs and ARs to the local sheriff's department, and we'll even provide storage for them here at our facilities!" And so they paid for 34 automatic rifles that are registered to a sheriff's department with only 19 deputies. Blackwater even let the deputies come out and shoot them a couple of times, but none were qualified to carrry them on duty, nor would they have any way of accessing them if they were.

This argument is equivalent to a felon insisting that "No, officer, that's not my gun. It's my wife's, she just keeps her gun in my bedside table!"

ATF didn't buy it, so they raided Blackwater and seized the guns.

Tell me, how does one pick a winner when two goon agencies fight over a law that shouldn't exist in the first place?

It looks like a tricky one at first, but at least Blackwater is not as close as the government as the ATF itself, which is the government. The ATF should not exist. Let's not favor the state.

Lex

I didn't know there even was an issue with Blackwater. Can you provide some background information to your quandary?

vanguardist

I think he means that Blackwater are tax-paid mercenaries that are in bed with the government and often do their dirty work, especially abroad.

William

Blackwater is scum of the earth. The really sick part? They actually think they're doing "god's work". If the ATF is going to enforce shitty laws, at least they should enforce them impartially.

See the documentary Buying Iraq or just youtube / google about them.

K. Darien Freeheart

I'm gonna have to side with Blackwater.

What he said.

What's worse, they do so with impunity, having the protection of our government, but no means of accountability. Soldiers would be --have been-- court-martialled for PC reasons just because something looked bad, when they had actually broken no laws. There is no recourse against Blackwater for committing war crimes.

On this specific issue I would be inclined to agree, except that I know they have a chance of getting away with it, but if an ATF informant talks Bubba into sawing off a shotgun 0.0001" too short, he's getting nailed.

Very rarely is the vicious-circle clusterfuck caused by the State actually amusing. However, this... is one of those times. ;D

Puke

Why not hate them both?
Maybe a meteor will take them all out at once.

not a tough choice
I don't support either one of them attacking the other
