Geico is evil. What now?

I have Geico car insurance and it's renewal time, but Geico lobbies for gun control. Someone suggested an alternative that was supposedly less expensive a while back but I can't remember it.

GEICO lobbies for gun control?  Not that I don't believe you, but this is news to me.  I seem to recall some hoopla a while back about "storing firearms unloaded and locked" in an article about home safety in one of GEICO's news letters.  The NRA "black-listed" GEICO, and subsequently "un-black-listed" them when GEICO claimed it has no position one way or another about gun control.

If that's the extent of GEICO's gun control lobbying, that's some pretty weak sauce.  On the other hand, if there's something else more egregious, I'd surely like to know about it.

BTW, I don't know Allstate's position (if any) on gun control, but when I switched from GEICO to Allstate in NH, my rates went down.

Do you have proof of this claim?

When we moved up here we switched from Geico to Allstate also and our rates went down too.  Do you think car insurance is cheaper in New Hampshire because it's not actually required?   I know Geico's quote was higher than Allstate but they were both cheaper than Maryland's rates.

Also does anyone know what happens if your at fault for a car accident in NH and you don't have any insurance?  Do they sue you or take your house away?  I've just been wondering what happens to people that don't have insurance if they've totaled someone else's car or worse like severely injuring someone else.

Someone brought it up at a Porcupine event. I don't recall now. I don't recall the details now.

It's best to perform due diligence before deciding whether or not to act on a rumor such as this.  Boycotting companies based on rumored anti-liberty behavior would leave me with very few options for goods and services.  :D  In this particular case, there are no readily identifiable facts that implicate GEICO in gun control lobbying -- at least none that I found.

Having said that, if I'm going to have insurance, I do prefer to have a dedicated agent living nearby who I can turn to in the unfortunate event that I need to use my policy.  That's how I found my Allstate agent, and the lower-than-GEICO rates was just icing on the cake.

Most likely if you don't have liability insurance on your car you don't own a home either.  You're still financially liable if you're at fault in an accident.

None is least expensive: $0.00.

Happened to me.

If you have an accident and you are uninsured you are liable for the damages.  In addition, the state forces you to purchase insurance for a period of time (don't remember how many years).

I also heard the GIECO funds torture and bombing brown people through paying fed income taxes.

That's what I figured but if you can't pay anything, you can't pay.  Wow, if the state forces you to buy insurance after the fact I guess your better off just having insurance in the first place, huh?  Thanks for answering,  you too Roycerson.

Well I guess I won't feel guilty if I just renew then but part of my motivation was the insurance company they suggested sounded significantly cheaper and they liked it.

I've been happy with the service and price from Nationwide (I use them for home, auto, and for my multi-million-dollar business liability insurance).

I think it boils down to your agent more than the carrier.  I still deal with the agent in Maine that I've used for over a decade, and the level of service they provide is outstanding.

My only gripe with Allstate is that when an Allstate-insured driver hit my car (and flat-out admitted fault from the first moment - hard not to, when she backed her Jeep into my stopped car in front of a few dozen witnesses), it took them over a month to pay to fix the damage to my car, and they payed well below the two estimates that I had from local body shops.

Yup.  Since you have the option not to, they have to keep the rates down at the point where you will still buy it.

The other driver's insurance agency will pay their claim (if they have uninsured motorist coverage, which almost all policies do), and then the insurance company will sue the uninsured driver to try and collect what they can.
