Apparently these people complained that their web page was copied and posted on the forum:

::)

Webhost threatened to shut us down for violating copyright laws. How lame.  ::)

doobie

Did they use the name NH Underground without your permission?  If so they are violating your copyright.

Are you in a position to be able to move web hosts if the need arises? Do you back up the database and all that? Just wondering. If not I'm sure there are some free staters that could help you set up an automatic backup for times like this. I'd offer myself, but it's been a few years since I've dealt with all that so there's probably better services available now. Peace.

And these assholes complained to your web host with the threat of the force of law, instead of contacting you to ask politely that you remove it? It's ostracism time for these jackasses!

it would be nice to have a server with people who do not enforce "intellectual property rights"

this was for a 2 year old forum post ... they must have extra time on their hands

exactly error .... the passport company and our server place could have asked us about the forum post

I wonder how ISPs became enforcers for the state?

DMCA helped, but I've personally always been more weary of the fact that the US Department of Commerce runs IANA and has far to much sway over ICANN. No datacenter wants their IP blocks revoked and domain registrations delisted.

Kat Kanning

Yeah, that's what they were citing, dmca.

You should preemptively switch providers.  That would make them think twice before they take sides with the people who aren't paying them.

doobie

I could be wrong but doesn't the DMCA provide guidelines for to fine the so called copyright owner, if their claims turn out to be bogus?

I've already paid til the end of the year, so not so dramatic.  :-\  I'll probably wind up switching then.

I still think setting up a very publicized boycott of the service in question here might be useful.

What kinds of transfer does this forum get?

I'd chip in to help offset the transfer costs if it means finding a host that won't bend to threats from goons hiding behind the government thugs.
