Just got off the phone with Progressive auto insurance.  They said they will still insure without govt DL or registration!   8)

Same here, same situation.

My insurance company screwed me recently, so I've been toying with the idea of switching. Progressive just jumped a few spots on my list.

Did you tell them WHY you don't have those things? I've been seriously wondering if I can get an insurance policy against the government. I've been thinking a lot about starting a brick and mortar business in NH, but one avenue is VERY clearly regulated and while it would be a GREAT CD opportunity, I'd not wanna risk it unless I could insure against government theft... Just rambling... don't mind me.

I should have recorded the call.  Perhaps one of you can get it in writing.

Go to there website and get a quote...
It does have options under DL for 'not licensed'.

Ah yes, but did you ask the even more important question. . .

is a claim from an driver without a government ID valid under the policy which progressive will honor?

I didn't.  That would be shitty of them to say I'd be covered then not honor the claim.

I bet the policy says that the car is insured, but the non-licensed driver is not.

For instance, Texas is a community property state, so both spouses must be "named insured", even if one doesn't drive. The non-driver (or driver, if they don't provide a DL number) will be listed on the policy, but named as "excluded" on the insurance card.

Yes, this is Progressive.

Edit to add: Their comprehensive coverage also includes other licensed drivers (mechanic, friend, etc.), but specifically excludes licensed drivers who are members of your household or immediate family members. That's to make sure they collect premiums for those 16-25 year olds in your family.

Interesting. FYI, avoid Allstate like the plague. They provide very good service, BUT they are actively behind the passing of many auto and insurance related laws out here in CA. I'll be dropping them when my coverage expires in Nov.

Does anyone know how AAA's insurance policy is in terms of these dl/reg requirements?

And AAA is the #1 pusher of seatbelt laws. Avoid them like the plague, too.

In New Hampshire auto insurance is not mandatory, unless you've been convicted of OUI, I think. Which leads me to believe that (so far) auto insurance hasn't been molested by the Federal government and states can make there own laws regarding insurance.  Does anyone know how many other states do not require insurance and which ones?
How does NH maintain this status, surely there must have been attempts by the insurance companies to
get mandatory insurance passed? Just curious.
It's kind of ironic, if a person doesn't  have insurance and their car is registered in NH, they can still drive in Massachusetts, or at least I assume they legally can...so if seatbelts are mandatory in Mass. how can that state (or any other) enforce people from NH on those rules, but not make them have insurance if they drive in that particular state?

A bit off topic, but does anyone know  which non U.S driver's licenses are "valid" in the USA, as in are there countries where a person may get licensed easily and use that license to drive here in the USA?
Any countries where it's easy to register a vehicle?
Do any states share information on drivers licenses, for instance if you apply in state x for a license, do you automatically lose your license in your current state?  Once you give up your license in a given state are you removed from the data base or can you demand to be?

John Edward Mercier

NH requires insurance for anyone that has been found guilty of negligence. If your in an auto accident, and found responsible... you lose your license until such time as restitution is made and liability insurance acquired.

Canadian drivers operate in the US on their license... others might exist.
US DL information is shared throughout the States and Provinces of Canada

Mass could enforce a requirement to have insurance (not sure if they do)... Canada does.
