they gave me room to rant...

The reason a seat belt law is a bad idea is summed up quite simply in the state's motto, "Live free or die."  An adult should be free to make any decision that only affects him or herself.  If there were an overwhelming rash of innocent pedestrians being injured by bodies flying out of vehicles, then a case for mandatory seatbelt usage could be made.  Thankfully, this is not the case.  I wear a seatbelt when I drive a car because I want to wear a seatbelt.  The decision to do so is my own, and is not predicated on any external influence, merely the potential external influence of a car not able to stop on a patch of ice.  It is one thing for the state to encourage people to take actions that will protect them in the event of such an unfortunate occurrence, but it is not the responsibility of the state to mandate that people take those actions.  So long as an individuals behavior causes no harm to another, it is nobody's business but that individual's.  Be it drinking until one's liver fails to function, smoking until one's lungs are black as pitch, or eating poorly until one can no longer leave the house through the front door, it is up to us to live our lives the best way we see fit, and accept the responsibilities for our actions.  The entire concept of freedom is in the ability for people to make mistakes and learn from them.  If I am wearing my seatbelt and get into an accident where I am actually caused more harm because I am wearing a seatbelt, it is my responsibility, along perhaps with the automobile manufacturer.  If, however, I am wearing it because the state has forced me to, is it not the state's responsibility for causing me that harm I may otherwise have avoided?  These are questions that should not a have to be asked, much less answered in a society that cherishes the individual's right to live their life as they see fit.

The state is not my mother or father, it has no place sending me to my room for not eating my peas when I go out to a restaurant.  I contend the peas were soggy, and not worth consuming, and the state has no place in saying otherwise!

I voted no also and included this rant:

"Give the govt. an inch of control, they'll take a mile.

If you want to fight this Nanny Bill come to www.NHunderground.com   Fosters will find good stories there BTW."
