I find this alarming. I have to be honest, I've always considered the UN to be a non-issue. I oppose centralization in principle but never had specific issues. Now, seeing this, seeing how it reflects the "shapshot of the opinions", I'm alarmed and outraged.

Short version of it, The United Nations and several national government agencies, including the US NSA, are working on "IP Traceback" "standards" (technically that term is incorrect, since standards are protocols designed for interoperation of competing things, this would probably not be voluntary...) that would supposedly eliminate the ability to post online. The drafting group is Q6/17 and it's both closed and "not fielding questions". The proposal was drafted by a Chinese hacker and pushed forward by Chinese government people and among some of the stated goals (and here's the scary part!) to "signifies the responsibility of account providers to demand some reasonable form of identification before granting access to network resources (similar to what banks do before opening a bank accounts)."

I have complete and total faith that if this is implimented, there will be ways around it. It just goes to show how bad the world sucks, and how imperative action is now. Anyone building ISPs? :P

I hope there are several alternate underground systems ready to go when the inevitable happens.
