Trucks carrying hazardous materials got more scrutiny today as part of an intensive effort by the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

Partnering with the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security, the THP is focusing on commercial vehicles, including trucks carrying hazardous materials, rental trucks and cargo trucks in the Knoxville and Cookeville districts.

The THP inspects trucks daily but brought in additional officers for the 12-hour enforcement effort that began at 6 a.m.

"We want to stop everything this 12 hours," said THP Sgt. Ken Rose. "As many as possible."

The officers are also inspecting trucks at weigh stations in Knoxville and Cookeville.

More details as they develop online and in Thursday's News Sentinel.
