I know that. This would be big spending for me this year. I might have to go all the way up to $300.
Kat got her windows laptop (first one) last year for $400 and it works fine. I am thinking I should be able to go linux and $300 for a laptop.

If you aren't going to install Windows on it, and just want Linux then I can put together an extreme budget box for around $310 $300 which still has lots of interesting features. Not to mention good looking too. I might be able to do something cheaper still, but I wouldn't be comfortable with the quality of the components in that case. (I've spent over $1,300 on my own box...)

If you DO want Windows then it'll be at my cost: Windows Vista Home Premium $100; Windows Vista Ultimate $190; Windows XP Home Edition $90

  • Intel Pentium E5200 Wolfdale 2.5GHz Dual-Core Processor
  • 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 800 Desktop Memory
  • 320GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive
  • 20X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe Black SATA
  • 4x USB 2.0; 2x PS/2; 1x Serial; 1x VGA video; 3 audio ports
  • Probably some other features I forgot about

Would it be fair to say that these computers also support Free Talk Live? :P And if the answer is YES, have you used anything by Rosewill yet? I ask because they're recently the brand I've totally fallen in love with. I've even put Rosewill power supplies in my last dozen or so builds. Steady, stable power, low noise, excellent price and attractive appearance (mirror finish). Rosewill is one of those brands that instantly make me think "Cheap components" but having risked it they have my highest recommendation.

Turns out, Rosewill is a NewEgg brand.

For what it's worth. :)

Can you do laptops, or are you just as crippled in that area as me?

that might be a very good way for a cheapskate like me to go
I might still want to get the little netbook like the cheapest eeepc

Oh yes, that is true, a portion of your purchase price will go to support Free Talk Live. ;D

You probably want to wait a month, Russell; I'm expecting some component prices to drop in the next few weeks.

Very well. But give as much lead time as you can, it being the helliday season.

dont know if anyone is interested but i have a core 2 duo system.  everything you need minus a case and a cpu cooler.  i am able to strip machines from work as of this week but i just cant take the case and the cpu cooler is from dell and therefore needs the case.  a great cooler is less than $30 and a case is anywhere from 25 to well ... you can spend a LOT on a case haha.

so I am going to strip as many as I can.  granted its not bleeding or even cutting edge but a lot of p4 HT and pentium D and maybe a few more C2d.

PorComputing Inc? lol!

If you think you want to buy something (new) in the next month or so, you need to let me know as soon as possible. Otherwise you may have a long wait on your hands. The hellidays are coming up, you know.

in my case ... when I am ready to order ... and want it from you ... I guess I can wait

FREE STUFF!

(sort of)

Purchase a new PC with Microsoft products preinstalled from yours truly between now and December 31 and you can get free stuff like wireless routers, printers, hard drives, smartphones and more (after S&H and mail in rebate).

Not that I particularly encourage the use of Microsoft products; I don't, but since the stuff is available, I may as well pass on the offer so you get the benefits.

More info on how it works.

@ Russell:

If you're looking for a ~$300-400 netbook, check out this link (Sale ends today tho...):

http://www.tigerdirect.com/email/wem1740.asp?cm_re=Homepage-_-Spot%2001-_-email_wem1740

Good luck...

Also, I might be able to obtain a MB (2.4GHz Athlon XP) & PS, which could be put with a case, HDD, kb/mouse, DVD-RW, and extra RAM (cost around $150 or so for that stuff) to build a machine. SW would be negotiable. I don't have an OEM copy of Linux around.

I'm planning on getting two of those Aspire Ones. FYI thought, $349.99 is the MSRP for that model. NewEgg's regular price is $349.99 and includes free shipping.

If you visit http://newegg.freetalklive.com/ then Free Talk Live gets a cut. They've also told the New York Tax Grabbers to shove it http://monochromementality.com/index.php/blog/show/NewEggcom-Might-Be-Doing-Civil-Disobedience-And-I-Support-Them.html

Can you tell I'm a Newegg Fanboy?

Was that a thinko? Do you mean Windows? Most versions of Linux Just Work (tm) and don't have OEM versions themselves. Fully functional versions can be downloaded for free online.

In my case ... I am thinking cheaper .... and MS free :)
