Lazy Man's Guide to Saving Money when Buying Food in NH

Here is my Lazy Man's Guide to Saving Money when buying Food in New Hampshire.

I've found I've been able to save the most money cheapest prices for buying food/sundries, etc. by using the following "strategy.'  This is only what "I" have found and so if you've found something better, please let me know!  THanks.

First, if you want to take the time to study all the grocery circulars, then this is your easiest way to zero in on the absolute best buys of the week ....strategy: go and buy big on the biggest deals of the week and don't buy anything else....but as this is the Lazy Man's Guide, I'm lazy to do that, I do not wish to choose to take the time doing that, so here's my Lazy Man's Guide to buying on the cheap!

1) Shop Wal-Mart first and buy everything you can.

2) Shop Market Basket Grocery stores (if you have one or Price Choppers in Keene) for everything you could not get at Wal Mart.  $4 whole roasted chickens at MB yesterday, I've found great deals on everything I usually buy, except for the Frozen Pizzas. The prices seem high on these.

3) Shop Shaws for marked down breads, whole roasted chickens (a bit larger than MB's) can be had for $5 (after $2 dollar markdown, done at the end of the day, before the day shift goes home).

RE: Stop & Shop.  I've found some fairly good prices (Frozen Pizza deals are good here) but in general, I've found Market Basket to be much better.  But with that said, if Stop & Shop is the only store around, then I have learned they have awesome program that let's you save big time on gas.

4) Hannafords.  Most expensive in around that I've found, but they also have the greatest selection (not sure about Price Chopper's, in Keene, selection depth but can only say I've found it be an amazing store with great deals.)

Final word for hard core savers, first don't go to the store hungry, second go after dinner rush, I've found after 6:30 or so to be good for Shaws when looking for the day's marked down items, buy only items that are on sale or items you know are priced good and finally (i'm too lazy to do this) but if you can make a list and stick to it, it's a good thing too.

Well that's all this lazy man has to say on matter for now (other than this lazy man now needs a beer for all that hard "work" he just did!). :drevil: :bdance2:

Price choppers in Keene always seemed more expensive than the other stores to me.

Peacemaker

Oh OK, thanks.  I was in there once, found some good deals right inside the front but never made it past that so I assumed the front deals were a reflection of the rest of the store (game buzzer now!!)

freeborn

Yup, if you want to get ripped off, just shop at Hannaford. They are experts at it. >:D

Recumbent ReCycler

I buy mixed frozen vegetables at Wal-Mart for about 75 cents/lb.  Bananas are usually only about 39 cents/lb.  I recently started buying grains and beans for as little as 99 cents/lb at Market Basket and as little as 77 cents/lb at Wal-Mart, and have started growing sprouts from them.  Last year I bought 10 lb bags of potatoes from Market Basket for $2 each.  The ones that didn't get eaten before they sprouted and started getting wrinkly got planted in my compost pile, which provided a decent crop of potatoes this year.  On most days I spend less than $3/day on food.  Eggs, rice, mixed veggies and cheese can make a good and fairly inexpensive meal, especially if you add a little spice to it.  Oats with milk and/or water and a little cinnamon and brown sugar can make an inexpensive breakfast.

Hannafords has great sale prices on meats.
The natural food store on Main st in Concord has good prices on bulk grains.
Market basket often is cheaper than Wallmart on most things.  Dried beans are the cheapest at Wallmart.
Market basket has great sales but you can't view the circulars on line.  Most other supper markets you can.
I've found Stop and Shop a little pricey.
Shaw's has great 4 day sale prices over most weekends.  These are good for meats and soda.
Target has some good deals in there frozen and refrigerator section.
BJ's has a very mixed bag.  I like them for some dairy, frozen foods and spices.  They have a great deal on #10 cans of crushed tomatoes.
Canned soups are also cheap there.

One of these days I'll have a nice price list like Dave.  I lost my old one when I moved to NH.

Agreed.  I often regret food shopping at Walmart, since the quality of items (meat, produce, generic food, etc) often isn't as nice as at Market Basket and I'm paying slightly more too... exceptions exist, as certain Walmart generics are quite good and inexpensive.

Location matters though: In Concord, Ft. Eddy Rd Market Basket is much better than Storrs St. Market Basket, for example.

porcupine kate

I have to agree with you Seth.

Also the bakery outlet on Loudon Rd in Concord has some very good deals on Bread.

Yup, if you want to get ripped off, just shop at Hannaford. They are experts at it. >:D

I think Shaws and Stop'n'Shop are the rip offs.  Shaw sells the cottage cheese I buy for 3.90.  Hannaford has it for $2.19.  But then again I do most of my shopping online or at Costco/BJs and local farms.

I would personally *never* think of buying any food, esp. produce/meat from Walmart.  I don't think I'd want to know what corners were cut to get the produce/meat they have.

Hannaford has become my primary grocery store in Keene since we don't have a Market Basket that's convenient. Hannaford seem to have the best across the board prices. Price Chopper has no business using a name like that. I consider it false advertising. They're outrageous. They'd have to give away an awful lot of gas discounts to make up for their prices. When you pay $3.50 for something that's $2 somewhere else, a nickel off a gallon of gas is still a great bargain... for them.

I buy eggs, bacon, granola bars, and grape juice at Wal-mart. Haven't had any problems. They had a dozen eggs for a dollar last time I was there. Bacon and pork in general is scary anyway. Just make sure you cook it thoroughly enough. Also buy non-perishables there mostly like paper towels and cleaning supplies.

Tim just ejudicated me to a bakery place that has great prices on baked goods. I'm going to check it out. Said they have english muffins at 6 for a dollar. Cheapest I've seen them so far is $1.39 at Hannaford.

Yeah, Hannaford's does tend to sell things at pretty high prices.  I'm glad you found english muffins at 99cents a pack.  It's good that a place near you offers Super Wal-mart prices.
