I skip Starbucks nearly every day. It's just too inconvenient.

Lloyd Danforth

I think I'll go o Starbucks twice that day.

Puke

You have to read the article jackasses.  :P

Starbucks says they will give a nickel on AIDS day.
So Dale is saying, skip Starbucks entirely and send the entire 4 bucks that you would have spent on that drink to the AIDS people.

I read the article. No Good Deed Goes Unpunished is what I get from it. I also don't get the $4.00 thing.  I pay like $1.80 for a cup of really good coffee for about the same as DD gets for the crap they sell.
Granted 5 cents seems like a token amount, but, these are tough times for Starbucks  as they continued to expand going into a failing economy and are having to close up shops and still pay leases on many of them.

Their charity campaign reeks of fake altruism. Liberals feel guilty for buying a $4 treat while people are dying in Africa and Starbuck's is marketing an alleviation from that guilt with this B.S. to convince people that their generous and altruistic by buying $4 Starbuck's drinks. I bet they'll spend more on the marketing campaign talking about how altruistic and generous they are than they will donate from all the sales. I probably didn't write it up as well as I could have as I was in a hurry to get the event up with time to get a buzz going before Dec 1st. Unfortunately, I feel a little weird about changing it too much now that over a 100 people have signed on to participate.

I did read the article Dickwad.  ;D

I still don't get the problem,
The AIDS people will get more money then
they would have. If some folks don't feel it's enough
feel free to out donate them.

There is no altruism here.  Altruism is self sacrifice... and not the I'll skip my latte today type of sacrifice.  Starbucks will donate according to their customers will.

Make Starbucks customers look like 'Supporters of the AID Effort' or make them look like 'To Hell With the FAGs'.

I agree... one could donate their five bucks else where... Starbucks wants to know how many of their consumers are concerned about this issue... don't make it one less.

How about... if your real concerned you make an extra five dollar donation.

Giggan

It is a sacrifice in that they are not raising prices five cents and then donating the extra, they are presumably donating the five cents they should have made normally off the cup sold.

I like the notion of exposing the fake altruism because it goes against the stereotype that we capitalists are all petty-bourgeois lapdogs of corporations. I wouldn't have gone to starbucks cause I don't have money to waste on overpriced beverages, but I'll participate just to be anti-fake charity.

Granted, the five cents they'll be giving is better than nothing, but it is ultimately just a marketing ploy. If it wasn't, the head of starbucks wouldn't involve his/her corporate company and would instead push for ppl to just make donations directly.

Jim Johnson

Altruism is self sacrifice.  Giving up five cents a drink isn't self sacrifice.

Giving up the job you love, your home with a pool in Las Vagas....  your existence.... your wife.... that's self sacrifice.

If you're so up upset about the aids crisis, why don't you try giving five cents for ever unit you sell... as long as it's a million units in a day.

AntonLee

went into Seabrook Starbucks today and informed them of what AIYH proposed. . . and one of them told me to come back tomorrow and they would have $4 to add to mine.

That's ok. They don't donate any money for that drink anyway. It's not one of their chosen three. That means you're just buying coffee because you want coffee, which seems completely sensible to me. :)

I was looking for a local charity to donate to today for my own participation in this event and I did a Google search for "aids charity new hampshire" and my Starbuck's post was the 6th link.  ;D ;D ;D
