First off, I think you meant secede, not succeed. But that happens to us all.

Lincoln did cause the hostilities by raising huge tariffs on the south. This impoverished the southern states and fueled the secession fervor. The war was about the states right to secede. States joined the Union voluntarily, but Lincoln didn't think they had the right to leave the Union voluntarily. So he helped start a bloody and brutal civil war.

I know it may be hard to believe, but the history you where taught in school and that you see in popular culture is wrong.

check and forgets to double check.  Second,  you completely avoided my
point that the south started actual hostilities.

Also, how can you argue that Lincolns high tariffs fueled the flames
of secession when secession started on December 20 1860 and Lincoln
was inaugurated in March of 1861? The math just doesn't add up?

I don't think it was Lincoln's tariff. Did you direct him to the link by Jaqeboy about the lies surrounding "the first shot"? It's long, unfortunately, but it's so crucial to the situation at the time. I bet you could sum it up for him.
