I asked him "Why?"

A more polite question: "Are you investigating a crime? and if so, how can I help you?"

Merle is one cop who deserves respect and politeness.
When I asked him this question, I didn't even know who he was. I don't usually ask random strangers if they're investigating a crime.  ;D
But, you let Random Strangers into the house.

I've been resisting pointing that out since I read your post ;D

You don't have to resist, Lloyd, we're all easy over here.  8)  As I said, I assumed he had good intentions, was perhaps here to help out with the house, and since I was passing by the door and it was cold outside, I just welcomed him in. He could have returned my gracious hospitality by immediately stating who he was and the nature of his visit, especially since he wasn't in uniform. He could have also, failing that, simply answered my question with "I'm so-and-so with the police department, and I'm investigating a robbery at the Grafton store last night. We saw one of your cars on the video just prior to the robbery, and are wondering if the driver or passenger saw anything suspicious, or have any information."

But we could conjecture back and forth all day long. I'm fine with the way I and everyone else handled this situation.

"Anyone with information is asked to call State Police, Troop F, at 846-3333."

Well this guy is as good as caught.
As soon as SGT.O' Rourke and Corporal Agarn
sober up F- Troop will hunt him down.

I don't help cops investigate "crimes".

That's understandable. But what about real crimes. Like robbing the Grafton Store?

All in all, it sounds like Merle was having a bad day. I had an encounter with him because the Bronco I lease matched (loosely) the discription of a "vehicle" engaged in suspicious activity. He was very polite, respectful, objective, etc. Other than this Hoyt Farm incident I've heard nothing but good about him.

That's a tough question—on the one hand, the crime in question is clearly an act of aggression, but on the other hand, helping the State capture and cage such a person isn't much of a solution. What the State is going to do to this guy if they catch him not only won't provide restitution to the victims, but is most likely far worse than what he did.

I don't want to use force to solve problems, so I don't really have anything in common with the cops.

Rifleman robs NH country store

Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008

GRAFTON – A masked man armed with a long rifle last night robbed the Grafton Country Store on Route 4.

Police said the man entered the store carrying a rifle, immediately demanded money from the clerk and tried unsuccessfully to pull the cash register off the counter.

He ran out of the store empty-handed and got into a vehicle believed to be a gray Volvo that headed north on Route 4. Witnesses chased after the car but were unable to catch up to it.

The Volvo was last seen on Cross Road in Canaan. Investigators do not know if more than one person was involved in the robbery.

The robber is described as possibly being in his early 20s, about 6 feet tall, with a slim build and wearing a black sweatshirt and camouflage face mask.

Police are following up on several leads.

Anyone with information is asked to call State Police, Troop F, at 846-3333. Trooper Alex Davis is heading the investigation.

Has this ever happened before in Grafton?  Just curious.
