However, I think Facilitator's idea would be one solution: privatize the land and what's on it. Another would be similar to how we treat pets, cattle, chickens, and zoo animals. I'm sure there could be other solutions.

All common assets have what is called a "sustainable yield" - that amount of fruit (see "usufruct") in this case deer that can be taken but will not degrade the common asset itself.

Sell annual permits up to the sustainable yield on the open market. Return the revenue raised to the owners of the common asset. All of us equally.

All of us equally.

That is the basic problem, the idea that something can be divided up equally.

No problem in this case. Divide the revenue raised from the permits equally.

Currently the revenue goes back into the management of the common property... and $1 to the Search and Rescue fund.

How about get rid of permits and everybody "equally" keeps their money?

You'd need another system to keep the deteriation of the common property from occuring.
It most likely wouldn't bother the populous-at-large, but hunter finding a diminished or even eradicated game population would most likely be upset.

Maybe trying to keep everyone happy speaks to the need for "a system". A diminished game population means less food to go around and natural selection takes over. We've allowed systems to over regulate our lives. How 'bout we try it without for a while?

Why would anyone in their right mind want to go back to the law of the jungle?

I think this is one of the first times John and I agree on something.

coffeeseven

I kill it, I eat it. YOU kill it, YOU eat it. Law of the jungle? Absolutelty! Seems to me government has more to do with me going hungry than staying fed.

error

But who's going to make sure the deer don't go extinct!!!! Whine whine whine!!! We have to have a government to protect the deer!!!

Jim Johnson

Yes, but if we didn't have a government there would be no roads and the deer would be safe out in the woods.

Moebius Tripp

Up here in the mountains of Cali, the deer breed like rats... rats with antlers.  My truck turn signal covers are tape since I moved up here.  Stupid rats.  Good tasting, stupid rats.
