I've got Skype, it's working well.

Same here.
Me too.  I'm getting a traditional copper phone line for my new business venture because the customers demand it.  I noticed a couple months ago when Skype sent out a software update that the quality improved significantly.  I have a battery backup for my modem and router so that if I lose power, I'll still have internet and phone for a while anyway.

Do you use Skype for all your phone needs?  If so, how do you associate a number with your Skype ID?  For example, how can you give a Skype number to your doctor/dentist?  I'm trying to figure out how it works.  Thanks for any help.

So for me right now I spent $24 on a USB headset / microphone and the $8 on a Skype card at WalMart (Sorry guys) that gets me unlimited outgoing only calls anywhere in the U.S or Canada for 3 months but I can't receive any calls in. You have to buy an actual Skype telephone number for that and that costs $18 for three months. You can supposedly get those "Skype credit" cards at WalMart but I didn't see them there. Or you can buy all at Skype.com. When I make an outgoing calls now it shows up as unavailable or 000-000-0000 on caller ID.

Then there's the Skype WIFI phone that you can associate to that number. I looks and acts like a cell phone. It makes and receives calls anywhere there is a WIFI hotspot but that costs to buy the phone and for the service too.

Yahoo! Messenger phone service is free to call anybody else that has Yahoo! Messenger. FYI

Friday

I just got MagicJack; it seems pretty cool so far.  $40 for a full year of service; a phone number; free outgoing calls within the U.S.; international call with prepay;  free incoming calls within the U.S.; free voicemail, which sends email notifications with audio clip attached.  Can use an online interface, or plug a phone into it.  30-day money back guarantee.  They don't offer NH area codes, though, so my new number is based in... Alabama!  [insert Confederate flag emoticon here]

I remember seeing MagicJack commercials a couple years ago. I look forward to your review, Friday, after you've used it a little while.

Do you have cable internet or phone co. dsl?

If you have cable, even if you have power to your hardware you'll still be out of service if the commercial power to the node which serves you is down. Just something to remember.

KBCraig

I just heard of this one tonight on a radio advertisement. Not especially cheap, but they promise 24/7 U.S.-based tech support, and business office hours of 9-9 (dunno which time zone).

The ad was on the Rollye James show, and they use them for their caller lines.

Their number availability has NH covered pretty well:

Got my Skype outgoing # and am now shopping for a wifi handheld for walking around in the world. Looks like the coolest looking one (Belkin) was discontinued and the Netgear has issues like getting hot. that leaves the Ipevo S0-20 @ $129.00. There are others but they are out of my price range.

The only complaint I have is not against Skype but against my laptop's processing speed. When I get an incoming call I of course fumble with the headset and press "answer". Skype continues to ring in my ear after I have pressed answer leaving my caller to say hello hello.

I want to hear how the Magic Jack works.

Someone had a hand held device kind of like a iPhone but that just uses wifi for VOIP. Apparently it's a mini computer like an iPhone as well. I think he said he paid like $200 for it. I got the impression he doesn't pay any monthly service fees to use VOIP with it. Anybody know about those?

Alternatively, I think a pre-paid cell phone is a nice backup for those who have VOIP at home. I'm using a pre-paid cell for all my calls right now but I tend to limit my talking quite a bit because of it. That's why I'm looking into VOIP.

Ipevo customer service and order line have a recording telling you to leave your name and number for a call back. I'm never impressed with that.

Got the Ipevo phone. I accidentally ran the phone over with my truck and will not be replacing it. Damn near worthless. Great novelty though.

Do you do a handset or a headset?

dalebert

I've only used Skype a few times for outgoing calls and so far so good. I haven't received any calls that way yet. Need to buy a phone #. It's certainly WAY cheaper than Vonage.

I just ordered one of these so I can use Skype on the go as well as have a little comp for email, browsing, GPS, etc.
