Anyone do metal roofing?

A fucking ice dam has compromised my roof and the side wall of my house.  I'd like to see what a new metal roof will cost me.  Anyone do this sort of work?

By metal roof you mean the common practice of having a few feet on your roof all the way around the house covered with metal or do you mean a metal roof like a trailer?  Also, clearly a few feet of your roof all the way around after even snow would likely prevent such problems in the 1st place.  My neighbor does it.

Joel does roofing all over the state though he lives in Manchester.  If he won't do it, he likely knows someone who will.

And 3 stooges construction is local to you. :D

Jim doesn't go on roofs anymore, as I understand it.  Cooper says he's good at tearing an old one off.

Your link points to several types of roofing.

Any one type you are most interested in?

Whatever is the most affordable option in the metal roof category.  I like the idea of no ice dams and never having to re-roof.

Russell recently shopped around for ours, so he'd be a good person to ask.

A metal roof doesn't address the real issue.

Ice dams occurs as the result of warm air (via infiltration and conduction) getting to the underside of the roof.

All roofs with icicles are symptoms of the same problem - inferior air barriers and insulation levels.

Here is a company I worked with for 4 years that properly describes the issue with a nice diagram. I also owned my own insulation contracting business and was in the industry for 17 years. I was involved in properly solving hundreds of ice dam problems in NE.

All of you folks who have come from a warmer climate should bone up on the subject!

I hear snow just slides off the metal roofs.  Not true?  Even if a dam builds up, the pooled water won't compromise the metal.

Strike at the root - don't hack at the branches!

Okay, but my roof is pretty old anyway and at least part of it has been compromised...so anyway, back to the topic.

It prolly won't hurt to do both-- fix the roof and blow more insulation into your attic. The latter is pretty easy and inexpensive and can result in great utility savings.

Yes, new information that changes the calculus.

Energy prices are probably going up again. They are not making anymore of it.
