It's stuff like this that makes me nervous about taking photos.  :-\

There are responsibilities that go along with doing this kind of work under these conditions. The most someone else can hope for is that the creator of the work tries to take into consideration the implications of publishing.

Or you could suggest that everything is fair game... I suppose that you can't stop anyone from doing whatever they please, but the resulting reaction from people is a consequence to be considered. The stifling effect on events is just one example... a newby, or someone that felt vulnerable under these conditions would not participate. People not being open because anything they say or do, might make tonight's news story. Even worse with someone else's editorial spin, is another example.

I was surprised to hear Dave use your full name; for some reason it just stuck out.

Pat K

So when  we see um ,er ah, well you know who
what do we call her?

I guess she could be one of the other 6 days of the week.

Sandy I'm sorry you feel that way... but do you think it's reasonable for me to have to ask permission of every person to quote what they've already broadcast to the entire interested world on NHFree?  Especially when their name is not secret?   Using that logic I would have to avoid re-broadcasting most of the 411 calls.

I guess I could have referred to you as Friday or ditched your last name but that would have made you sound pretty not-credible on an issue that requires a lot more credibility than most.

I didn't ask the Travises when I quoted them or named them, and even though the video questions them more than you I'm sure they wouldn't expect me to.

Your message is important and it appears to me you wanted to broadcast it openly; that is what you did here.

Ah well, I guess if I am going to play reporter I have to take the heat that reporters take.

Also the video does make clear you are not currently an LP official, but rather a former one.   Whether you hate me for quoting you or not, I appreciate you speaking your mind in a potentially unpopular way on NHFree; it's the first chance any of the liberty media have had to give any kind of counterbalancing credible opinion on this issue.

I agree it wouldn't be appropriate to punish NHFree for something NHFree did not do. I did it, so if you want to ostracize...ostracize me not them.

With regard to Tim's phone number I got his permission and blessing to leave it in the video.  I think, although I'm not sure, that is the only vid with a number broadcast...if anyone has concerns regarding the appearance of a number in a video, just let me know.

Those of you who have concerns...maybe it's best not to keep them pent up for broadcast during fair-weather-friend season.  Bring them to me whenever you feel them (some of you do this, some don't).  Sometimes I will not do what you suggest, but I would rather not wait to hear your concerns until years after you experience them.

I would gladly call her "Tuesday" for a hamburger today.

I guess I count myself among the confused. Like almost everyone who posts to any of the FSP/NH-related forums, I've known her by both her screen name and her real name for years now. I've replied to her on the forums using her real first name. I believe she herself has made no effort to keep things a secret; that would be hard to do when she has posted minutes and reports about her political activities (and her resignation therefrom), all using her real name.

So... I guess I should apologize for having used her name without permission. If I did so to her detriment, I apologize.

On 12/15/08, Dave, you sent me a PM letting me know that you had already published a Ridleo with my phone number in it (because you included a porc411 call I made in which I revealed my phone number, and you did not edit out my phone number). You said you'd delete the video if I wanted (even though it was already broadcast, i.e., even though the damage was already done), but that you probably wouldn't edit it. I told you I didn't care that my phone number was broadcast, but that other people might.

Here is the PM you sent me and my response:

a video i aired featuring your 411 call about lauren's release...

has you giving our your phone number.  do you want me to delete the vid?
editing is not really worth the trouble

Dave -

Thanks for thinking of that, but I personally do not care. It is something you should be careful with, though. Even if someone puts their personal information on Porc-411, they may not wanted it broadcast to the world (or the Ridleo audience, which is not centered in NH).

No need to delete or edit the video with my phone number in it.

if friday comes back as another person on all the forums of the world ... he can't tell anyone or it will ruin it :)
but if PatK starts laughing at the jokes then he might be revealed

Puke

This whole mess confuses me.

Dave, the problem is you are oblivious to many of the subtitles involved. I have tried to talk to you and got a similar response to what you gave Friday here... ie. How does it affect Dave.

You yourself told me to discuss it on the forum... I had tried to deal with you on a personal level. The only reason I weighed in here is because it has become an issue again.

You want to be the News Guy, people need to treat you like any other News Guy. I've been associated with that world, what a bunch of mercenaries.

All this being said, you have worked hard to try and get information out. It's just that I also see the negatives associated, and you refuse to see any harm that your work may cause. No more open carry at Murphy's is there, just as one example.

You write good narration, even though I find that style of work boring. The editorializing on the fly that you do remarkably well is also the danger, a small government republican doing coverage of Anarchist issues is bound to be problematic.

One day an incident will happen and Dave will cover it because it is dramatic, and the coverage will convict someone. I have done this kind of work in the past in D.C., I have destroyed tapes to keep them out of the authority's hands, I have stopped taping because it would be damaging to my side of the issue. I have been very careful to present the issues in the vein that the principle people involved wanted to be presented.

Tom makes good points.
I don't photograph anything that I feel might incriminate someone else or embarrass them. I have all kinds of shots of people making goofy face that I will never reveal or have deleted b/c I know the person might not want such silly looking pics out there.

Maybe getting the story out so fast is not the best approach. Getting the story out correctly and safely (considering the position us activists are in.) is a better position. IMO

That being said, I find all this privacy stuff kind of odd. I mean, do people really expect that their name is a secret?  :dontknow:

AntonLee

the name thing I've been thinking about for a while.  When I first started coming around I had decided that my former nickname "T-Bone" was too generic for me, and so I wanted to choose something different.  I went on myspace and did a stupid little "what's your porno name generator" thing.

My porno name is :   Anton Lee.

anyone who's asked me why I ask them to call me Tony have heard the same story.  I'm not ashamed of who I am, but I was fearful of retribution for words I might say online.  On the net, I'm much different than I am in real life. . . . at least in a emotional/demeanor way.  The thoughts and feelings I have a hard time expressing in person flow like a river from my fingertips to the screen.  I'm subdued and quiet, especially around new people.  (I'm continually working on this)

My real name:  Stanley Anthony Jankowski III

stanLEE ANThONy. . . and it's out there.  For good.  Forever.

and now, everything I've ever said here, on FTL BBS, on Rideo comments, everything.  I've come to the conclusion that I don't need to hide how I feel, because what I say isn't wrong.  What I say shouldn't get me into trouble.  Whether I state out loud that I smoke weed, that I take pictures in restricted areas of "government" property, that I lambaste some gubmint official.

I guess I realized that finding out my real name wouldn't be that hard if you really wanted to try.  My screen name IS all in my name!

Sandy, I've seen you pop up on my facebook as "person you might know" like a hundred times.  I knew it was "Friday" but I don't know you personally.  In fact, I'd have to say that 80% of my FSP facebook friends added ME!  Finally I decided that it wouldn't be weird to add you as a friend.  I respect what you say and I while I might disagree strongly at times, I've found you to be friendly and knowledgable.

As for Dave and the picture taking points. . . I'm a new photographer. . . very new.  I love to take pictures and I've been taking more and more with people in public.  I've gotten some very very nasty comments from people simply because they've walked in front of my camera and I thought that their child on their shoulders was an excellent picture.  If the person is nice, and states that they'd rather not have a picture of their child online or something. . . I'll make an offer to send them a print in exchange for their "blessing"  (NOT permission).  I've done this twice and gotten positive response.  For the simple buck I might spend sending them a print (or in one case an email with a digital copy), I've stopped a conflict.   A few people though are not so nice. . . and to them I don't really care.   In one case I picked up and moved away.  Another I said that they had no expectation of privacy in a public park.  They both explained that if they saw their image online they'd "murder ya" and "sue you into poverty"  (poverty isn't that far off anyways)

At the least, I tell the person with a smile to "have a nice day" and hopefully that will end it.  Frankly, I've had my picture taken before and while I might not care for it, I've understood that I've put myself out there.

But, I'm a noobie to the photography world, and with spring coming I'm more than likely to find more and more people who wish to protect their identity no matter where they go using threats of violence.

and while I've not had the interaction of Tom Sawyer and others with Dave, I do have to spout that my experience having Dave interview my girlfriend was friendly.  He asked if she wanted to do an interview and she hesitantly agreed.  It couldn't have turned out any better I don't think.  She was proud and showed her whole family.

so with all that, I hope Friday reconsiders and call me Tony.  :)
