Making use of Twitter

I was thinking that maybe NH freedom activists could set up twitter accounts.  We could use these to rapidly send information to many activists at once.  It would be great for notifying others of random police checkpoints, activist arrests, protests and general mobilization.  Twitter accounts can be set up to send updates directly to your phone by SMS or, if you have a data plan, through twitter programs installed directly to the phone.

Any thoughts?  Has this been tried yet?
