Horse thieves may no longer be shot

I have a problem and am looking for help finding a solution.  I rent a room in a house in Manchester, and one of the other tenants in the house is a food thief.  Everyone knows it; he steals from every one of us.  I have tried all of the obvious techniques for resolving this problem: I've spoken with him directly; I've left notes; I've gone over his head to our mutual landlord. Nothing has made a difference.  I'm really running out of ideas here. I'm assuming this is too low level a crime to report to the police.  I can't physically intimidate the guy; he's bigger than me. I can think of all sorts of delightful revenge fantasies, but they all just seem like a form of M.A.D.: anything nasty I can do to him, he can turn around and do to me.

The dollar amounts involved are small, but in principle the issue is enormous (at least in my mind). I have been an unemployed college student for a year, just relocated across the country, and am dangerously close to broke. And that S.O.B. keeps taking my breakfasts and lunches (I'm not talking about pilfering sweets, either, I'm talking about staples, protein and such).

I could solve this problem by simply moving out. But that seems outrageous. Did I just move over 4000 miles for "freedom", only to be chased out of a nice home by an NPR-blasting, Greenpeace-hugging, lying, thieving bully?

Looking for creative and realistic options here. Thanks for your help!

Lace some of your food with mega mega hot sauce.  Watch him fry.  He can't complain....you asked him not to eat it.

Small refridgerator for your room (with a lock on it  :) )

Not realistic, but the kitchen scene from Conspiracy Theory...   ;D

Has the suspect been caught in the act?

We thought only freedom loving conservatives lived in that house....how'd he get in there?

NPR? That alone would cause ME to move! LOL

While amusing, it still destroys more of my own food. Besides, it would be a waste of perfectly good hot sauce!

Those little refrigerators aren't too expensive  :)

I've thought about that. But that seems like a variation on the "move out" option. It burdens me with unforeseen expenses, my room is already overcrowded, and it rewards the thief with extra storage space in the big fridge.  A more fair solution would be if the landlord made HIM buy me a mini-fridge with a lock on it.

And yes, he has been caught in the act, more than once.

At least one freedom lover already HAS moved out, in part due to the NPR noise pollution and food pilfering.

I vote that the landlord should ask the thief to leave. Anyone who comes to NH via the FSP movement should know better than to steal or leech off of other FSPers. This is a huge NO NO!

This person should be subject to mob justice and just have his things put out on the curb.

The thief isn't a freestater.

Well that's a relief!

Followup to this:

Although he is bigger and stronger than me, I looked him in the eye and told him to his face that I'm tired of his thieving and won't stand for it anymore. He responded with denials, accusing *me* of taking *his* food, condescension, smirks and rudeness.  He suggested that I go to the police.  This man is the epitome of a bully.

Does that mean NH isn't the Free State?
Wouldn't anyone that lives in the Free State be a freestater?
