His second one is enlightening, but sort of wrong.
Humans and other animals could always produce more than they consume...
Under natural circumstances they just won't waste the energy beyond a certain threshold.

Early rulers discovered that if they could 'take' enough to keep the population below this threshold... they would create more labor output... and that taking enough to create 'need' resulted in even further labor output.
Bee Keeping is a fine example of this economic theory.

Ummmm... that was an "inside joke" for those familiar with Larken Rose's writings. I'd explain, but I don't want to spoil Rose's book "The Iron Web" for those who haven't read it. If you haven't read it, put it on your list. It's only ~350 pgs, a quick read, and IMNSHO would be greatly enjoyed by most everyone who posts here...

(and, I did get the joke about Stefan being President...  ;)  )

I will probably go and check it out since I don't live very far from there.  If anyone else is going, let me know.

Is Minarchy Possible? I'm a skeptic. There's quite a lively back and forth in the comments already since I posted this a couple hours ago.

In a way...
The current system is actually multiple minarchies acting in majority.

Realistically, anyone who believes in any sort of archy is a minarchist. Stalin thought the most efficient government was a large, tyrannical one. I'm sure it was just as small as he believed it needed to be to function.

Brandon

Is there a  video of the debate up anywhere yet?

But when Stalin gave State employees the 'axe'... it was much more literal. ;)

Is this available somewhere yet? I would really like to listen to it.
