too bad you can't put continuously recording microphones on the police that they are to wear at all times.  Can you imagine how many malfunctions a day would be happening?

You may think they're your protection,
But a few seconds' reflection
On the record of police should give you pause:
Note the unpleasant reality
Of everyday brutality
Employed in the enforcement of our laws.

In response to these abuses
There are numerous excuses
That reflect a common public sentiment,
Mostly dealing with their "rarity"--
But note this one disparity:
"Exceptions" total ninety-five percent.

But they assure us,
"Just a few bad apples--what about them?
They'll be dealt with in our own established way.
You'd be captured, beaten, raped, and killed without them . . ."
Never mind they do that to us anyway.

Now and then police have picked a m-
Ost outraged and vocal victim
Who thinks pointing out the problem merits thanks.
Admin hears of the corruption,
And, resenting the disruption,
The entire system blithely closes ranks.

There will be investigation
By their own administration,
Who will find that everything was "by the book . . .
"Followed full police procedure . . ."
Citizen, beware!  You'll need your-
Self a lawyer now to get you off the hook!

And they'll loudly claim:
"Just a few bad apples--stop complaining
Just for that, we'll be investigating you.
That's the price you have to pay for our maintaining
Order formed from orders we impose on you."

Well, regardless of their Yes, buts
Cops have morphed to petty despots.
No consumer input impacts what we're getting.
They usurp with brash impunity
De facto full immunity:
Ipsos custodes need custodiet-ing.

For relief from these conditions
Put the brakes on politicians
Who ensure we all are guilty of some "crime."
Make the function of police
Just catching crooks and keeping peace,
And watch the social order lighten over time.

So at last to say:
Quite a few bad apples, but we juiced them
The remainder keep the people safe and free.
Now to redesign the system that produced them,
So the blight remains a morbid memory.
