Has anyone thought of moving far into the woods without ammenities?

That idea sounds revolting to me, personally. I can't imagine myself living any kind of quality life without constant social interaction, electricity and a decently fast high speed internet connection. To each his (or her!) own though.

I might have fun doing that on a vacation though, but not as a lifestyle.

Yeah, I could see how it can sound pretty bad; but less stressful.  The social interaction, especially on the forum would really bug me more than "in person" social interactions.  :-\

I just know that when the power is shut off due to a storm or something my whole body/mind seems more at ease.

I don't know about living without the internet or a shower though and I know I'm too big of a chicken to have an outhouse to go to the bathroom in.  How in the world did people used to do that?    I guess you can't miss what you never had.  :dontknow:

Wait! Stop the nay-saying, the hopelessness... what about Calamity Jane?! In her perty cabin by the "crick". It WAS just a quick ride into town...

Or.. the, hey, speaking of Disney.. the Swiss Family Robinson! Memba the awesome treehouse? Actually, what was that first movie Brooke Shields did where her "brother" and her got intimate.. The Blue Lagoon.. didn't they have a treehouse?

Eeew, I don't know if they had a treehouse.  The "did her brother" comment made me lose my train of thought.  Maybe we will stay in a house, in a town.  :D

outhouses are not a big deal. its really not any different than shitting on a toilet except there is no water. and it'll stink worse unless you put something on it.

when you make an outhouse just put on a regular toilet seat, and you dump lime on the hole to stop the smell and everything else.

then you just move the outhouse and cover up the hole and dig another one.

Rainey, come visit me and we can talk about simple living in a realistic sense. Different people do choose different ways depending on their goals. It isn't too far for an afternoon trip. I will bake a loaf of bread and we can sit on the porch with lemonade. Sorry, we have no cable or tv or stereo/cd/dvd stuff. I do have a toilet, though, and a shower.

That is a thought. Didn't get quite the right stove for it, but maybe I could figure it out.

Chimney oven from Cabelas. Pretty cool if a little pricey.

We could get rid of cable and the tv

That's the best idea of all. When you give up television then you have to find more creative entertainment.  This more creative entertainment is well....

more entertaining.

In 1991 I lived in west stewarts town (just south of pittsburg) and lived on top of this mountain where we could see canada. vt. ,maine and deep into Nh. It was 6 miles from the nearest utilities but we did have a generator to give the plants light. we got our water from a pole jammed into the side of the mountain and either showered at beaver falls in colebrook or heated water in a 5 gallon bucket and hoisted it up a pole to take showers or used the solar bags it was a fun summer but when your used to creature comforts it's a bit different. my girlfriend wasnt much into outhouses but there wasnt much choice. One time we took a hit of acid and had the most horrific thunder storm I thought the trailer we lived in was gonna blow right off the blocks it was on and the thunder and lightning on top of that mountain was the wildest mother nature experience  ive ever encountered'.As a whole the experience of living mostly off the land with little emenities. it was a great time if only i hadnt gotten arrested and done 2 years in prison for growing pot it would have been a perfect summer away from all the shit south ways and i would do it again if all was right.

We sit around the living room singing kumbaya.

That is my favorite thing to do. Sing songs and play guitar.

Drum circles are pretty fun too.

I went to the coffee shop instead of watching T.V.

T.V. is passive entertainment.  Why pay for passive entertainment.

Country living is more expensive, not less (that's why people live in cities). If you can get a telecommuting type of employment, it's feasible... but adding long-distance commuting and backwoods low-tech house repairs to life makes it more difficult. (The Swiss Family Robinson is like Martha Stewart... they had hundreds of Disney employees making their "handmade" stuff for them).

Plus, supposedly most of us are here to be activists... have to be where there are people.

And most of the towns in NH qualify as "the woods" by most standards anyway  ;D
