It won't do any good to hide under Rainey's skirt.

Governments have known about "The Bird" for thousands of years.  But it wasn't until the 1800's that a plan was devised to try and save the earth.

Correction:  It won't do any good to hide under my blue jeans.   I'm a 'Bell Bottom Blues" kinda girl!  ;D

Strong earthquake rocks central Japan

(AP) – 1 hour ago

TOKYO — A strong magnitude 6.6 earthquake hit off the eastern coast of Japan on Sunday, rattling buildings across a broad swath of the country, including the crowded capital.

There were no reports of casualties, with only light damage to structures near the epicenter, according to local officials.

The quake hit at 5:08 p.m. and was felt most strongly in central Fukushima prefecture about 130 miles (210 kilometers) northeast of Tokyo, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

"It was fairly strong, but didn't knock over anything in the office," said Ken Yoshida, a town official in Naraha, one of the hardest-hit areas. He said an earthen wall in town was partially toppled.

The earthquake was centered about 50 miles (80 kilometers) off the eastern coast at a depth of about 25 miles (40 kilometers), the meteorological agency said.

The government said there was no danger of a tsunami, although slight changes to ocean levels were a possibility in some areas.

It was strong enough to gently sway large buildings in Tokyo and was felt across a broad stretch of Japan's main Honshu and northern Hokkaido islands.

Japan's early warning system predicted the earthquake just before it hit, with public broadcaster NHK interrupting a sumo match to warn residents to take cover.

The country is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries. In 1995, a magnitude-7.2 quake in the western port city of Kobe killed 6,400 people.

Magnitude-5.6 quake strikes near Guantanamo, Cuba

HAVANA (Reuters) - A 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck near Guantanamo city in eastern Cuba on Saturday, sending residents fleeing into the streets but a local government official said there were no casualties.

A spokesman at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay reported no damage there.

"It's all calm. There's no damage and no victims either," said a local government official in Guantanamo city, who asked not to be named.

State-run Radio Reloj reported from Guantanamo that the quake caused cracks in some buildings and some pieces of masonry fell.

The quake, which also was felt strongly in Cuba's second city of Santiago de Cuba, was centered 27 miles southwest of Guantanamo at a depth of 14 miles, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

"It was very big. I was at my computer and suddenly felt the strong shake and we all went into the street," said Lisset Foster, who rents out rooms at her house in Guantanamo city. "Everyone is in the street."

Residents of Santiago de Cuba, about 32 miles from the epicenter, also felt the temblor.

"It was awful. You could feel it pretty strongly. It lasted longer than normal. Our phones are only receiving calls," Ariadna, a 34-year-old Cuban in the eastern city, told Reuters.

A magnitude-5 quake can cause considerable damage but Chief Petty Officer Bill Mesta, a spokesman at the U.S. Guantanamo base, said none was reported.

No tsunami warning was issued for the region.

The U.S. base in southeastern Cuba was used to transport supplies and personnel to the aid effort after the devastating 7.0-magnitude January 12 quake in Haiti, about 200 miles away.

A prison on the base, set up for terrorism suspects after the September 11, 2001, attacks, houses 188 detainees. President Barack Obama pledged in January 2009 to close the controversial prison within a year but his efforts have been hampered by legal and political hurdles.

You said 'blue jeans' in the first sentence. I added Skirt which is what I'm guessing you intended.
