While surfing the firearms forums last night reading reactions to your openly carrying your gun, I was astounded to learn that Kalifornia passed a law that requires an open-carry gun be UNLOADED.  Adding insult to injury, another law allows any cop to demand your gun to determine if it loaded.

It's more like California prohibits carrying a loaded firearm, so "UOC" (Unloaded Open Carry) is legal in California by default. (Note: there are exceptions, and CA is particularly tricky, so educate yourself before trying to carry in California!)

QuoteYou did a great job!  Very impressive!

Ditto.

I carried in CA with no problems.  It was only for 9 months though.

Is it appropriate for gun-rights activists to openly carry their weapons near a presidential event?

    *
Yes. Law-abiding citizens should be able to do whatever is legal.
    *
No. It's needlessly provocative and could be dangerous.

"Organizationally, the FSP has a president in Swearingen (a California native who defected to Keene in 2004),"
