After much thought I decided to take the (sarcasticly given) advice of one officer shane childs, and run for sheriff.  He recently told me that if i "didnt like it run for sheriff" and then drove away.  So ... since I will have the power to remove him from his permanent ego trip, and have the power to actually change some of the crap that goes on in our (my) home state, I decided ...

I'm running for Sheriff when the time comes.

I've always heard that NH sheriffs are relatively weak compared to other states, especially those further west. That's probably because NH towns are like miniature counties, where you can be inside the town limits, yet well outside the "compact part" ("the village area", etc.).

How does the sheriff have hire-fire power in the Salem PD?

What type (if any) of education etc does one need to run/ become a county sheriff?

Keyser Soce

Make it happen but watch out for that ring of power, it tends to corrupt those who wear it.

I've said for years that politically oriented libertarians should give up their legislative campaigns and try running for sheriff, prosecutor, and judge, and infiltrating the police department.  Glad to see someone showing agreement.

I will be your deputy if and only if you call me Dog.

It may be a case of NH sheriffs having little power through traditon and just "the way things have always been done" in NH.  Just because they don't actively wield that power doesn't mean they don't actually have it.  They are the supreme court of the US-acknowledged "highest law enforcement authority" in their county, specifically saying this in a case that was sheriff's authority vs. federal agent authority.  There are 11 counties in NH, right?  How bout eleven freedom friendly sheriffs.  Or maybe just ten, and the other one a wacky, bumbling criminal like Boss Hogg...because that'd just be plain funny.

Sullivan County Sheriff

QuoteRoles and day to day operations of each Sheriff's Office differ from county to county. In Sullivan County the Sheriff's Office has taken on a proactive approach to law enforcement through marked rural patrols, educational functions, and expert support of local law enforcement initiatives.

Investigations of criminal activity is a growing field for the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office. Every deputy possess specialized skills in various fields of criminal investigations. As the demand on local law enforcement grows, the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office is taking an ever increasing role in promoting public safety and crime prevention through quality investigations.

I have limited access and a 13 hr time difference over here in Japan right now.  More to come on the campaign later.

Couple things I want to say before I lose my connection again:

- I have never met one that blew my mind with smarts either but I guess that is one of the many things that will make me not the average sheriff, I am educated, I am logical, and I am not on a massive power or ego trip.  Real criminals will be taken care of.  Fighting the system from within the system seems like a good idea and the only way.

Also I am aware of the darkness that could consume me once I have the ring, but, I won't let it.

I don't know if I will have the power to terminate corrupt and/or generally crappy cops, as far as Officer Childs; I will have the power to investigate things like his officer on officer shooting, and what he does in in "spare" time, and review his performance.  I am willing that if i scratch the surface I will be able to find plenty of complaints against him, plenty of violations, and plenty of things that would more than likely be grounds for termination.  Anyone else who falls into the boat I guess they have time to straighten out before a new sheriff comes to town eh?

I'm interested in talking about this topic, very interested.

How interesting, some of us were discussing this on FB about a week ago.
RSA 655 http://www.gencourt.state.nh.us/rsa/html/LXIII/655/ was what I found about how to go about running for Sheriff.

I was gonna try for Hillsborough. I bought a giant cowboy hat. And my slogan was going to be "There's a new sheriff in town."
