I've wanted to try pemmican for years, but have never found a cost-effective source. Does anyone around here make it? I'd be willing to pay you for a small quantity in order to try it.

According to Wikipedia :
    * US Wellness Meats in Missouri currently sells pemmican in bar and bulk form. The pemmican is made from grass-fed, hormone- and antibiotic-free beef and contains 45% tallow and 55% dried jerky.
    * Native American Natural Foods, an Oglala Lakota business in Kyle, South Dakota manufactures and distributes the Tanka Bar — based upon traditional wasna (pemmican). It is made from a combination of buffalo meat and cranberries with an herbal-based preservative.

Thanks for the links, but it's not cost-effective for me to ship in canned meat from Missouri or South Dakota.

Sometimes at gun shows you run into people that offer jerky and cheese they make themselves. Perhaps one of them make Pemmican.

I wouldn't think it would be hard to make some homemade variant of Pemmican. Berries are used in it.  They are in season.  Ya gotta try doing stuff like that now that you have a homestead!

You're right, I *do* have a homestead. *And* a full-time job, and a 1.5 hour daily commute.   :coffee:

I figured I'd put this out there and potentially exercise the beauty of the free market: I am offering to exchange FRNs/silver to someone who has more free time and culinary expertise than myself.  Also, since I don't even know if I like the stuff yet, I'd much rather obtain a small sample of someone else's than spend the time and effort manufacturing a whole batch myself.  It seems like the sort of thing that someone on this board might be into making.  If not, no biggie; I've still got bacon.

There is no substitute for bacon!

American Indian culture has nothing for Pat K.  No Beer & No Bacon!

I've got the deer meat in my freezer if you want to try an attempt at making it.

Good stuff. Very dry though.
Well, that's actually jerky with the brand name Pemmican.  Real pemmican is quite greasy, or so I've read. It's 2 parts meat to 1 part fat.

Puke

Well now you're just being picky!  :(

Pat McCotter

Not picky, Puke. The energy available in pemmican is greater than that in jerky.

Pat K

Much greater, despite today's dread of fat
back in them days, if ya did not get enough fat you died.
