Fortunately, due to modern technology, the making of pemmican is no longer as time consuming and can be easily produced at home. Nearly all the commercial products sold under the label pemmican are not the genuine article.

To my knowledge the only retail outlet that sells pemmican that is close to the original item is US Wellness Meats but I have been told that their pemmican does not keep for long periods of time without refrigeration. I don't know whether or not that is true but it is a solid reminder that when you make your own please be certain that your meat is thoroughly dried and the ratio of fat to lean is 1 to 1.

Oh, THANK YOU!  They offer free shipping with a $7.50 "handling fee", which isn't bad considering what shipping costs.  I'm going to try it.

Edit: Oh, good grief.    They have a $75/7 pound minimum order requirement.  This is why I'm looking for someone local who's selling it.
