Just desserts:
Humble pie served in Franklin

WHAT COMES around goes around. So the leaders of Franklin are learning.

Last year the city of Franklin refused to pass along $75,000 in state education aid to Franklin Career Academy, the state's first charter school. The money was not the city's to keep. It was state money appropriated on a per-pupil basis to educate the students attending the charter school. But the city wanted the money, and the council voted to keep it.

Now the city is paying for that decision.

Education Commissioner Lyonel Tracy has informed the Franklin school district that its state aid would be $75,000 short this year ? the exact amount owed the charter school. The district would receive its full appropriation only if the city forwarded Franklin Career Academy the money owed it.

Last week the Franklin School Board voted 7-1 to sue the state rather than fund the education of the students whose parents chose to enroll them in the charter school.

Imagine, a local school board concerned more with money than with educating students. Sadly, it's not so hard to conceive.

Commissioner Tracy deserves a big pat on the back for standing up for the children. They are the victims of a foolish turf war between Franklin and the state. Franklin officials don't want to give up control of the kids or the money. And they have proven that they will go to extraordinary lengths to keep the children trapped inside public schools in which their parents believe they are poorly served.

That kind of arrogance is exactly why school choice is so important. Parents ought to have the ability to escape tyrannical public officials who think they alone know what is best for all children.

Oops! I forgot that Franklin is the town that did this. :-\

so pat .... how have you guys liked concord .... now that you have been there awhile?

It appears to be the hammock safety net of NH.

Russell Kanning

so their big punishment is to have to pay back the money they stole a year ago? ..... I gotta get some of this action

FTL_Ian

I do like Keene, from what I've seen so far, but for activism purposes it would seem Concord would be best.

Oh, and I PLAN on moving elsewhere.  I want land, and not an old-ass house.  I want one of these:

Russell Kanning

No ..... what is Remi's?

Pat McCotter

The little Greek place at the other end of the street from the church you were in front of. Across from the steps of the courthouse. Sorry I didn't think to tell you b\efore the protest.

Kat Kanning

mmm Greek pizza is the best.

Pat McCotter

Sorry. The Greek place has the usual greasy pizza slices.

They have great subs, gyros, mousakka, baklava, etc.
