Sam A Robin.

Cute song. :)

What kind of fight were you expecting??  I'm serious.  I'm a bit of an odd duck and I can't figure out what you were going to debate but I still want to know what it was.

Thanks for the post Kate. Some really excellent points.

In order to make friends and educate people; you need to be able to relate to them. You need to be able to see things from their point of view... even if you think it's 'stupid'. Always be careful with the words you use and what they mean. Saying 'smart' when you mean 'informed', or 'stupid' when you mean 'misinformed' does a disservice to you and the person you are thinking about. One can be good at correlating data (intelligence) yet have bad data to work from. Conflating the two problems may give you a false sense of superiority, and inhibits your ability to relate to them. Always consider what you look like from the 'outside'. Would someone not versed in the writings of Bastiat or von Mises or Block understand what you're talking about? Would you like it if someone challenged your worldview using the language you're using?

Sadly, the government education system (and its more privately-operated clones) encourages and even rewards conflict and bad behavior between students. I certainly was desocialized in some terrible ways by my time in school. I can understand being angry at the world, feeling powerless, and wanting to lash out and smash everything in retaliation for what I felt was being done to me.

Part of the cure for that was learning to treat people as individuals -- the 'random person on the street' is not just a clone of the average of all the other people in the world; they're just like you, only having had different life experiences that shaped them the way they are.

Another part of that is getting smacked upside the head by the real consequences of one's actions. When you find that your girlfriend feels alienated from you because of the language you use (whether that be about 'liberals' or 'Republicans' or 'negroes'), you realize that because you used divisive language, you divided yourself from someone you love, and your life is poorer for it.

Another part is to learn to first look at what someone has correct -- what things do you have in common with them. The way I learned this was when I read about an archetypal 'leader' summarized with the phrase "That's a good plan, but here's what we're going to do." First look for a way to praise the person you're talking to. Then look for a way to persuade them to look at a different possibility that's slightly different. Then, if there is time (perhaps at a later date), have them consider another option that's even more different. It takes a long time and a lot of exposure for people to change their views... the best you can hope for is to gently feed them information until they have their epiphany.

The keyword above is 'gentle'. One is gentle with another person when one does not challenge them too much at once. For example, challenging their views about whether a certain tax is moral is one thing. People may readily accept that without one tax, things wouldn't be very different. Challenging their views about all taxes is many things, and calls into question a fundament of the way they understand the world to work. Telling them that the Fed causes inflation rather than controls it is one thing; telling them that government shouldn't have anything to do with money is another. I'm not saying that the extreme position shouldn't be advocated at times (the civil disobedience types have changed my views a lot); but it's best to consider how to ease people into a new worldview, lest they push back.

As for girlfriends; I gave up on Porcupine girls and got myself a local. I figured I could make a libertarian more easily than I could find one. ;) I also found it was a lot easier to find a New Hampshire girl who was closer to where I am towards liberty, than a Massachusetts girl or a Minnesota girl. So for you lonely porcs who haven't moved yet; come here, the girls are more libertarian. :)

Ha ha awesome song Sam.  Where I can find the melody?
Phone me up and I'll hum it for you.
I also noticed--after writing it--that it's one of the songs that can be sung to "Gilligan's Island," "Amazing Grace," "Pop Goes the Weasel" . . .  I have a list of 40 or so.

There was a time none too long ago when any reply other than the sycophantic bleat of "Men bad, women good" would have led to fifty pages of contumely.  I'm glad to see that's not the case here.

Thanks for letting me know me know.
Have no fear about me being a sexist bitch.  The worst of the the destructive and evil people I have ever met were women.  Don't get me wrong I have known my share of slim ball men too.

I just like to see the good in people.  I haven't been seeing enough of it for my taste.

From an entirely selfish and egotistical viewpoint, I say let them be as liberflashy as they want to be.  It can only increase my odds, once I arrive in-state.   :icon_pirat:

Semi-seriously (as that is as serious as I can take myself), maybe a bit more assertiveness is called for amongst those who are directly affected by the flash.  E.g. the hosts whose "guests" are overstaying their welcome.  Many polite folks find confrontation distasteful, but hey, how's a liberflashy supposed to learn?

I like the model where you go to the offending party in private, and air your grievances.  If that doesn't work, take a friend or two with you to point out the error of their ways.  If there is still no resolution, ostracize.

It may be that the liberflashies, being new to the ideas of liberty, hear ideas of "libertine", and simply need to be gently nudged toward personal responsibility and respect of others.

Ok, so I'm an optimist.

If some of you guys would just go gay, we could really improve the FSP ratio issue. I won't deny that my opinion is biased.

Well if worst comes to worst the male porcupines could just get a basketball!!!

I'm considering sending Kate a PM or a postcard or something, each time I get laid.

I believe you're missing the point of the original post.

porcupine kate

Better yet send me one each time you convert some one to pro liberty and personal responsibility.

I don't care if you get laid.  If you get really good at convincing people that minarchism/anarchism is way to go you will go far in the movement and have no trouble getting laid.

Yes, you've mentioned that the title was an attempt to garner more views, but I'm against that sort of thing, so I'll continue to address the subject raised in the title.

As I mentioned before, the pool of available, single, willing, porcupine women is so small, it borders on insignificant. I'd be MUCH better off getting really good at playing guitar, or practicing at being a Yo-Boy (the natives/co-eds apparently love the Yo-Boy look...), if the goal is simply to get laid.
