QuoteThis is not the first time that the NSA has partnered with Microsoft during Windows development. In 2007, the agency confirmed that it had a hand in Windows Vista as part of an initiative to ensure that the operating system was secure from attack and would work with other government software. Before that, the NSA provided guidance on how best to secure Windows XP and Windows 2000.

I know the NSA also helped with seLinux.  The difference is that seLinux is open source.  Kind of hard to add backdoors if others can remove them when you're finished and then publicize it.

The NSA is involved with almost every major OS.  They have writeups on "hardening" your OS and showing you how to secure it.  Some of it is great to actually use other stuff is rather overkill i.e. disabling audio devices and built in web cams on a hardware level meaning to basically cut the cord AND the power to the built in webcam.

I think the takeaway here is that not even the NSA can make Microsoft products secure. :)

Surely you don't think a government agency can do better than a private company, do you?   ;D

Surely you don't think a private company that seeks monopoly status on preexisting and obvious ideas from the government, to keep people from competing against them, can do better than a bunch of hackers in their free time do you? :P
