Hint for used cooking oil

If you have used oil that has been used for cooking fish, frying turkeys, etc., and is past the date for re-use, save it.

It's great to help start fires in a charcoal chimney for grilling: just fill your chimney with charcoal (lump, preferably, not briquettes) or wood chunks, give it a good soak with used oil, and light as you usually would. It's not volatile like other flammables, and doesn't impart any nasty taste like petro-based starters.

Use a silicone basting brush to wipe down your grill grates, both before and after cooking, and it will seriously reduce rusting and make clean-up easier.

If the Grafton VFD chief isn't around, you can even use it to help burn small piles of brush.

There's always biodiesel too, but most folks don't generate enough used oil to worry about that.

i set old oil in a can in the woodstove in the winter and enjoy the heat for a while

Acetylene torch works faster :)
