I'd love to know the bank where you opened your account.

Washington Mutual... darn, no branches in Kentucky.

It will keep growing and spreading and splitting up and causing all kinds of grief for the rotten government. :)

I share this vision.  May it happen sooner rather than later.

Actually I meant to post this last week.

My wife called them and said that we won't open an account because they are asking for my SSN.
The manager called me and asked me about it.  I said my SSN is between me and the IRS. He said that the reason is they want the SSN is if I wanted to open up an account.  I told him I would pay in cash or credit card but I would not like an account I just want oil 2-3 times per year.  He said he would check into it.
The owner called me and said it was OK because I was not opening an account.
I even got a $25 new customer discount.
;D

So I just bought oil for the first time in NH.
...
They also left a letter saying I need to give them my SSN.  There was also a note that said if I don't give my SSN then it is cash only from now on.

I can't wait until Monday to call them!  If they get a cc why do they need my social.  Looks like I will be getting a new oil company.

I just bought my first load of propane today. When I saw "SS#" on the form I hesitated. The guy offered a solution immediately. Something called "Load to Load" - basically they don't trust your credit without a credit check so you need to pay bills in full. Once you've been a good customer for a year, they trust you.

For anything other than a job would fudging your SSN really matter at all?

IE - for your oil company thing?

I mean, it should be very rare that someone actually verifies your ID with the SSA.

Wow, they've built that much on your house?

Yep. I'm hoping to move in next month.

Today they were preparing the walls for sheetrock. Tonight I pretty much finalized the kitchen design. Saturday I need to pick the tiles.

They still need to build the front porch and the deck and dog kennel in the back, as well as putting on the siding. The inside has a lot of work left.

The pic shows the side facing Freese Pond, from near the shoreline. I own the land up to the waterline - if the dam breaks, I get more land!  ;D

Hey that's great!  I'm sure Otis will be happy too :)

Not sure yet when the party'll be, but it'll also likely be a meet'n'greet for a couple more. Two roommates from MN will be moving in.

Otis absolutely loves the place (see pic!). Our only neighbor Skip has a nice dog called Spanky.

We have 2.2 acres, but are surrounded by 18 acres of town land.

I don't think that's correct.  Non-governmental software can include algorithms to check the validity of an SSN, so if you enter something bogus, they may catch it immediately.  And plenty of companies run credit checks on people, and that's based on your SSN.  In fact, if you get a copy of your own credit report, you can see all the companies who have requested copies of it.  I assume that doctors and dentists pass them back and forth when transferring your medical records.  I'm currently trying to get my dentist back in California to ship my X-rays to New Hampshire.  I changed my name while I was a customer of that dentist (due to marriage), so who knows what's written on my file.  I suspect they will track me and dig my records out of storage by my SSN, which never changed.

And don't forget the identity thieves. They need your SSN too  :P

While I'm not ready to burn my card just yet, I'm almost there.

Meanwhile I'll get my vicarious thrills watching others burn theirs.  :)

If you have bad credit or a history of cancelling policies---you get whacked with higher premiums.  This is only as a result of legislation in the past three years.  So much work and so little time....
If you have bad credit and have higher premiums... I can't say that I am going to fight that battle.
People who don't pay their bills cause those of us who do to have higher premiums.
