Fixing "Windows Not Genuine" Bug

Apparently MS implemented something meant to catch not genuine (per their very narrow view of "genuine") versions of Windows that sometimes reacts even to "genuine" (per their very narrow view) versions of Windows.  In addition, there are increasing concerns that their update slows your machine and makes extra processes run in the background.  There's a link to some fix by Daz that seems to be popular.  You have to scroll down the page a bit or just search the page's text for "Daz".

Don't get me started again.  I am a big fan of the idea of using open-source software.  It's just eventually I had to stop spending weeks trying to get my computers to work and do some actual work.  It's probably a great educational hobby for people who don't have to get any actual work done on their computers.  I look forward to the day that can change but I can't afford to be a hard-working Linux activist that brings that about right now.

When was the last time you tried Ubuntu? If it's been a while I recommend trying it again. It's pretty easy to use these days.

A few months ago and I wrestled with it for a couple years spending more time trying to get things to work than doing "real" work.  When you guys are drawing cartoons, doing design projects, and editing video with it, let me know, and I don't mean as a fun occasional side project.  I mean when you're trying to pay your bills that way.  Until then, no amount of "but it CAN do that! and it's SO much more stable than Windows!" is going to stand up to the real weeks lost struggling with it with a new computer.  I think two years is enough to say I gave it a fair shake.

And if you want to continue the Linux evangelism, can you start a new thread (so I can ignore it)?

I am using Ubuntu 10 right now: it is stable, easy to use, and does not have the awesome windows 7 interface...

Sorry, but Windows 7 has a pretty spiffy UI now. Aero has so many nice features that Ubuntu or GNOME do not have. So I don't use ubuntu on my computer. I only use it on my wifes.
Lots of reasons to use windows now.

I'm a Linux evangelist. Yes, Ubuntu 10.04 is friggin' AWESOME. I recommend people try it, it's a LTS release that's gotten a lot of attention, looks nice and is a lot more stable and functional than things were for me even a year ago.

That said, I've also got a 45 GB partition on my drive for Windows 7 Ultimate.

Dale, you wanna fix your Windows Not Genuine bug once and for all? Download and run RemoveWAT. It removes the WGA check entirely and allows you to install updates from MS servers. I've not messed with hacks, cracks, keygens or serial databases since Vista was released thanks to it and it works flawlessly on 7.
