Free video in Concord at Liberty Books!

Sometimes, a good documentary is all about being in the right place at the right time. It does not get much better for Kim Bartley and Donnacha O'Briain, who, in late 2001 began filming a documentary about Hugo Chavez, the controversial President of Venezuela. As they worked on their documentary, events in Venezuela reached a fever pitch and the duo was able to capture on film a coup from the perspective of the Chavez government. The footage is remarkable, especially given that actual events were so clouded by propaganda on both sides. What is clear is that this was a coup orchestrated with the crucial help of the media. Without their support, it would not have been successful.

HUGO CHAVEZ elected President of Venezuela in 1998 is a colorful, unpredictable folk hero, beloved by his nation's working class and a tough-as-nails, quixotic opponent to the power structure that would see him deposed. Two independent filmmakers were inside the presidential palace on April 11, 2002, when he was forcibly removed from office. They were also present 48 hours later when, remarkably, he returned to power amid cheering aides. Their film records what was probably history's shortest-lived coup d'état. It's a unique document about political muscle and an extraordinary portrait of the man The Wall Street Journal credits with making Venezuela "Washington,s biggest Latin American headache after the old standby, Cuba."

This documentary shows the role of the police as guardians of the people and the importance of us educating our protectors. There has been concern stated that "they'll just do what their paymasters tell them to", so we offer this video for your consideration.

The movie was great last night at Liberty books, even though this was the 3rd time I'd seen it. One of the really interesting points is that Chavez was re-instated partly due to the fact that he had been distributing pocket constitutions to everyone in Venezuela and encouraging people to read, study and discuss it.

So the palace guards knew that the coup plotters who took over the palace were not legit. and when they could organize a plan, they sprung and arrested the plotters and locked them up in the basement. Then they phoned up the officers of the legit. govt. and told them they could come back now. A must see moment. Link to the video online in the original post in this thread.

A dictator who has no regard for human rights is the head of a "legitimate government?"

Did they mention that Chavez led a failed coup, ten years prior?  Guess he thought different, when he was the recipient...

Did they mention that he created the constitution, the copies of which he was handing out?

Did they mention how, despite the initial constitution's two-term limit, when his own term limit was approaching, Chavez conveniently managed to get that removed?

Did they mention prisons (containing numerous political prisoners) that make Arpaio's prison camps look like vacation resorts?
