The Keene Free Press idea is a great one.

Just make sure someone has an AP Style Book handy.

And you'll probably want to get in as much local coverage as possible, and that includes sports - keep the paper (if this is the goal) independent and make it priority No. 1 to keep those in power accountable, but also put the Keene sports scores in and stuff.

If I can make it to NH for at least two weeks, I would love to help you guys out.

I started an online news blog: www.elliscountyobserver.com - and it's becoming extremely popular, especially since I'm no longer writing for the county's only indy paper.

But you guys keep up the good work. Make sure there's someone who can handle photography duties! Photos sell more than anything!

Please don't. Following the AP Style Book produces horribly convoluted leads and attributions.

You needn't have worried.

We're not doing sports, either.

Russell Kanning

We are not following all the rules .... we are breaking them.
We cannot fill an empty niche if we just mimic the old line newspapers. The Keene Sentinel have been around for 200 years or so, we have to do things differently.

Russell Kanning

The glaring weakness with our competition is that they don't cover news that makes the government look bad and the news they do cover has a socialist slant. We are completely different and that gives us an opening that they will never fill because they have a pro-big-government bias.

The other thing we have going for us is that newspapers are being crushed by the internet in general and big content providers specifically. The ways we can avoid their fate is to be nimble free and online and very local in our coverage to stay under the radar of yahoo, google etc.

We might cover sports, but for local sports the old paper is pretty good and we have no room in our print publication. We might have some sports stuff online.

They are going to accuse us of not having any "journalistic integrity" and that we are not doing things by the book. Let them. Normal people are going to get their voices heard and we will cover subjects they just won't touch.

My focus will not be keeping people accountable. It will be destroying the evil power structures that are enslaving us. The first thing to accomplish is NH secession. That is a big job, but it will be worth it.

Looks like a "BYOSnow" event.

No snow porcupine entry?

Kat Kanning

Interesting.  Cynthia Georgina and Tim Robertson were talking about the Keene Free Press on WKBK this morning.  They couldn't have been saying anything nice.   >:D  We only found out because someone contacted us with maybe wanting to advertise with us, and said we could distribute papers at their business.  Thanks for the promo, Tim!!   :toothy4:

So the paper while have a primery focus of showing how the federal government is evil so people will want to secede? Or, what other avenues of promoting secession do you have?

Just as an update ...... we are finding places to distribute our free papers. There is a list on the website.
We are collecting a little advertising, which is promising.
I have had great conversations with shopowners and patrons about the paper, when I go around. I am learning many derogatory names invented for our competition. :)
I can't wait to hand out the first issue.

Kat Kanning

Woohoo!!  The first paper is sent off to the printer!   :blob1: :blob5: :blob9: :icon_compress: :flower: :walk: :sunny: :wav:

This is an idea that should spread across the state.

How many pages is your first issue?  Page size?
How many locations do you have for distribution?
What was the cost of the print job?

Kat Kanning

8 pages, 11 x 14, 5000 copies.
Russell's got a ton of places for distribution lined up.  People outside Keene seem real excited about the idea.  http://keenefreepress.editme.com/Available
Cost was $450, which should come down quite a bit.  Between ads and donations, we're paying about $150 out of our own pockets for this issue.  Two people in the area heard about it, contacted Russell and bought ads.  The other ads + the donations were from freestaters.

Oh and we have 500 bumper stickers now :)
