Today's (10/26/2005) Concord Monitor has a good LTE:

How are 40-year natives supposed to deal with the influx of modern culture imposed on us by the continuous flow of outsiders to our world? We have accommodated growth by allowing the expansion of our roadways even at the risk of losing that homey feeling of our small towns. I personally have suffered the indignity and embarrassment of verbal abuse from local traffic cops.

At one construction site, at 10:45 a.m. on a sunny day, I drove into a patch of fog near a lake and noticed a police officer waving a flashlight at me. I thought he was telling me to slow down. Suddenly, he jumped in front of me screaming for me to stop.

He insisted a construction truck nearly hit me because I didn't have my headlights on. I had just stumbled on the fog when I saw his flashlight. I didn't have time to put on my headlights. I did not see a construction truck anywhere.

Less than a week later, I stopped at another construction site with my truck full of equipment. The officer motioned the traffic line to proceed. Everyone slowed for a dip in the road. The police officer yelled and waved for me to hurry up. I tried to indicate that I needed to go slower because of my load, but he just yelled for me to pick up speed. He motioned me to pull over. The officer wanted to know what I meant by defying him by telling him I wasn't going to go any faster.

I have always respected the law and the law enforcers, but I expect the same courtesy from them. The uniform doesn't make the man, so don't use it to be one! Treat people the way you want to be treated.

Should I sign up anyway?

Oh, and if you send your letters to the Keene Free Press, they'll get printed :)

That may have something to do with the fact that when people from the paper call you, you refuse to talk to them!

Dave, I don't think so. No one from the paper has called me ? lately ? and if they do and it's about my letter, I do verify that the letter was sent.

Pat McCotter

Mine was printed without a call.
