I CHALK YOUR SHRINE  ("I Walk the Line"--Johnny Cash)
COPYRIGHT N 2010 by Sam A. Robrin or whoever the hell it is who writes these things. Go ahead and use it (hey,I lifted the melody), but if you make a little money on it, I want some!
Johnny Cash: Walk the Line

The Fed'ral Building stands for rule of law,
Disgorging dread directives from its maw.
They'd like to disregard this line I draw.
To leave my sign,
I chalk your shrine.

Chalk fades when rainclouds next provide a bath,
But folks who travel off the beaten path
Are singled out as targets for your wrath.
Since cops are swine,
I chalk your shrine.

I'll fight the tyranny you're dreaming of
Plotting inside your "Ministry of 'Love.' "
You think your power makes you God above--
You're not divine.
I chalk your shrine.

You make the rules up as you go along.
You're so corrupt, you can't tell right from wrong.
The unmourned past is where you thugs belong.
Despite your fine,
I chalk your shrine.

The Fed'ral Building stands for rule of law,
Disgorging dread directives from its maw.
They'd like to disregard this line I draw.
Cops who are slime
Make chalk a crime.

CHALK IT UP TO TYRANNY

Lou Reed- Walk on the Wild Side

Walks the walk and talks the talk, Russell Kanning!
Chalked the sidewalk with "Free Brian Manning."
Cops balked at the way he was dressed--
First walk-chalker to face arrest.
     State bullshit that
You can chalk up to tyranny.
     Petty hassling
You can chalk up to tyranny.

Officer Thompson strutted his way through town
Like Freddy Krueger--via Bozo the Clown.
Thinks the law comes down to
Anything he wants to tell you to do.
     That's one more crime
You can chalk up to tyranny.
     Another autocrat cop
You can chalk up to tyranny.

   And the activists say
   No no-no no-no no-no-no
   No no-no no-no no-no-no
   No no-no no-no no-no-no
   No no-no no-no no-no-no
      (No no-no no-no n-no-no-no
      No no-no no-no n-no-no-no
      No no-no no-no n-no-no-no
      No no-no no-no n-no-no-no NOOOO!
)

Kat was showing where she draws the line.
Bored cops see a chance to chain and confine
Bragging about how nice they were
As they continued to hassle her,
     That's one more crime
You can chalk up to tyranny.
     Lost liberties
You can chalk up to tyranny.

Cops dragged Emperor Evan across the brick
They laughed like Conrad Veidt in some old war flick.
Every twitch and muscle spasm
Brought his tormenters to orgasm--
     One more crime
You can chalk up to tyranny.
     Ominous parallels
You can chalk up to tyranny.

Little Sophia went on drawing pictures
Innocent of burgeoning State strictures
Will they go after toddlers next?
It's happened--check any history text.
     One more crime
You can chalk up to tyranny.
     Atrocities
You can chalk up to tyranny.

   And the activists say
   No no-no no-no no-no-no
   No no-no no-no no-no-no
   No no-no no-no no-no-no
   No no-no no-no no-no-no
      (No no-no no-no n-no-no-no
      No no-no no-no n-no-no-no
      No no-no no-no n-no-no-no
      No no-no no-no n-no-no-no
         (No no-no no-no n-no-no-no
         No no-no no-no n-no-no-no
         No no-no no-no n-no-no-no
         No no-no no-no n-no-no-no  NOOOO!

Alice's Restaurant Jason did you find this?
I'm Thankful for my NH family.

Sam A. Robrin

Now can you find me an easy download of "Alice: Before Time Began"--also known as "Alice's Restaurant: The Multi-Colored Rainbow Roach Affair"?  I heard it once, in 1969, and think it even beats out the original.

After the release of the original album, Guthrie continued to perform the song in concert, frequently revising and updating the lyrical content. In 1969, for instance, he performed a 30-minute rendition of the song which centered on the creation and military deployment of a "rainbow-colored roach". A recording of this version, given the title "Alice: Before Time Began", was released in 2009 on a CD distributed by Guthrie's own Rising Son Records label.[Tales of 69 is the album] Guthrie again updated "Alice's Restaurant" years later to protest Reagan-era policies, but this version has not been released on a commercial recording. He sang a third version during the Bush administration which was recorded and released by the Kerrville Folk Festival.

Looking for the download now... a perfect treat for Thanksgiving.

Added: From Amazon as CD or download
Added: no luck in finding it in all the usual places.  Internet elves are falling down on the job!
Added: Ah, let's all be thankful for the Internet elves: http://taperfriendlyartists.blogspot.com/2010/07/arlo-guthrie-alices-restaurant.html
Enjoy your Thanksgiving, I'll be listening to the traditional song, in new versions I've never heard before, thanks to Sam for pointing me to it!!!!

Russell Kanning

I get it on Radio Paradise on Thanksgiving. :)
