Have you ever read any Thomas Szasz?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Szasz

To sum up his description of the political influence of medicine in modern societies imbued by faith in science, Szasz declared, "Since theocracy is the rule of God or its priests, and democracy the rule of the people or of the majority, pharmacracy is therefore the rule of medicine or of doctors."

they have a pill for that

And another one to supposedly try to counteract the side effects of the first one.

Very interesting video, thanks, Kat.  As I watched, I could not help but see the parallels with what is going on in the rest of medicine.  Although there is evidence, and real illnesses are being treated, medicine is increasingly being driven by the pharmaceutical companies in exactly the same way as far as cherry-picking studies and bribing doctors.  More and more, there is pressure to conform by establishment of guidelines that, if a doctor does not follow, leaves him in a precarious position should he be sued.  These "guidelines" are often underwritten by big pharma who pay "experts" to select studies that "prove" expensive interventions are the best treatment.  You can be certain that lifestyle changes, nutritional counseling, vitamins, etc. are never part of the protocols.  With Obamacare, these "evidence-based medicine" treatments will become mandatory.  Already there is substantial pressure from the government and insurance companies to go along, if the physician wishes to be paid for services.  Bleak future for medicine in this country!

So true!

John:  thanks for the Szasz link.  I didn't know that.

I'd have to guess and say that over 50% of people are on antidepressants. That's being modest.

If you are depressed I'd give you some good old fashioned physical work to do.

MUCH better advice than what the shrinks will tell you.

If you talk to God, you are praying. If God talks to you, you have schizophrenia.

Dr. Szasz

Dr. Szasz is a staunch opponent of involuntary commitment, as am I.  It completely flies in the face of self-ownership and is frequently abused.  He has written some excellent critique on the subject.

Psychiatry and psychotropic drugs: bunk.

So sad to see very intelligent people turn to "black-and-white thinking" about what obviously is a very complicated issue...

The human brain is a very complex organ, quite possibly the most sophisticated one in the known universe, and its functions are subject to dozens of categories of different processes, some of which can go wrong for a variety of reasons, as is the case with any other organ.  The scientific method can establish which chemical reactions have which effect in which circumstances, crudely but effectively enough...  Modern psychiatry is helping tens of millions of people live a better lives - by their own voluntary choice and acknowledgement!

It also harms many, but less so than in the past, and most of the on-going problems come from government-introduced biases, misdirection (ex. blind faith in the violent and corrupt FDA monopoly), and mismanagement.  The combination of psychiatry and government is a terrifying dystopian nightmare, but the same could apply [to] any advanced science hijacked by deceitful thugs - the government is the root of the evil.  Science is merely a tool...

People can also do a lot of harm to themselves and their children through psychiatric malpractice without the government, including through existing popular recreational drugs, so individual responsibility and vigilance are necessary - as is the case with all other aspects of medical care.

The level of which psychiatry wields the violence of the state is astounding.  All a doctor has to do is fax a piece of paper to a police department and the next thing you know a SWAT team is put into action.

That could keep a Free Stater psychiatrist busy 24/7....
