And Sikhs are probably the most "American" of any immigrant religious group: fiercely independent, family oriented, and NAP to the core: their religion requires them to carry a blade, but forbids them to draw it from the scabbard unless blood must be shed in defense of self, family, or others. If they draw a blade when it wasn't required, they draw blood from themselves before returning it to the scabbard.

not exactly the personality type of my ancestors when they came to this continent, but they don't seem to hurt anybody :)

Sikhism is one of the most consistently-libertarian of all religions.  That is, while members of Christianity, Islam, Sikhism, et cetera, can span the range from totalitarian to anarchist, any random Sikh picked out of a crowd is more likely to embrace liberty than a random Christian, Muslim, Jew, or whatnot; it's a more-recent religion, and has not deviated as much from its original teachings as have others.

Yeah.  Never ask a Sikh if you can check out his knife (or sword, but in the US, the kirpan is usually a knife).  Serious bad manners...

There have been a number of court cases in which Sikhs were able to win some level of protection for the wearing of kirpans in jurisdictions (eg, NYC) which ban knives.

The chakram, throwing rings are cool. We watched the show Weapon Masters that covered them.
