...which brings up an issue: a large number of people who are uninsured are more than likely exempt from filing, because they're low income or unemployed and owe no tax.

In order to catch these scofflaws, are they going to stop allowing people to not file, and make it mandatory for everyone?

Tom Sawyer

From what I have been able to decipher of the Supreme Court's ruling... (Supreme Court... is that a court with sour cream on it?)   ;D

It's not about them being able to require you to purchase insurance, it's that they can "tax" you if you don't. They use the word "tax" instead of penalty.

I guess it's like, constitutionally, they can't outlaw the ownership of machine guns, or making whiskey, or in 1937 possess cannabis... they just tax and regulate it, and by default make it illegal. Waco was about the "untaxed" machine guns. You can make whiskey, you just have to pay 500 bucks a year, be open for surprise inspection, have it in separate building etc. You can grow hemp, you just have to beg and get the license... (which they never give).

Friggin' lawyers torture the language and logic...
I can't stomach entertaining any of the BS mumbo jumbo lawyers/judges/politicians spout... evil is what it is called.

I almost wonder if Roberts didn't have something up his sleeve when he declared it a tax. Obama had loudly declared that it wasn't a tax, and for good reason: the only tax allowed on individuals is the income tax. Any other "capitation" is unconstitutional.

So even though Roberts ruled every aspect of Obamacare unconstitutional, he said that the individual mandate is a tax, which lets the law stand. Somebody is probably going to pipe up eventually and say, "Hey! If it's a tax on individuals, it's unconstitutional on that basis alone!"

Or not. Both sides were well greased by the insurance companies.

yea it seems like some people get some sort of healthcare from the government or company .... then some of us can't or don't want to afford  it .... and many of us don't file taxes. So it seems like many people will not be effected.
we have been scared many times that the government is going to tell the doctors what to do and they keep making things a little worse each year .... I wonder if it will get much worse quickly or like it has been.

Lloyd Danforth

I guess it is the insurance industry's turn to make profits above and beyond what they would make without the government interference.

If this continues on it's present course...
If you go to the hospital they will need you to be insured, or be eligible for the government insurance, which will require checking a database to prove your income/eligibility etc. "Before we treat you citizen show us your papers."... "Oh, you do not appear in our databased, we must file a non-compliance report."

Some now can't get a drivers license because of their not being able to produce all the necessary documentation... The future will involve a much worse result... no access to medical care, children seized for "endangerment" etc.

Russell Kanning

I can see them making sure you are "eligible". Then if not they will demand you apply or produce the required insurance. So that the insurance companies get their cut like LLoyd said. Dont they already look at you funny when you dont have all their normal papers?
You know I have heard there are Robin Hood sleeper cells around.

Here we go... the republican response/solution, just give people the money to buy health insurance! A kinder, gentler socialism.

GOP pushes carrot approach to insurance, over ObamaCare mandate's stick

Why doesn't the government just let individuals make there own choices in life?  Because the government is a bunch of stupid ass holes, always doing stupid things, stupidly.  The way stupid people always stupid up all the stupid stupid... stupid bastards.

I think I see the problem, you can't fight stupid.
The people of the United States fight over what is stupid, vote for what seems less stupid, all the time ignoring the fact that it's all stupid.

(Maybe Sam can fix the punctuation.)

The pun is mightier than [the s-word].
