Kind of a spoiler alert for Breaking Bad if you're not caught up. Then again, it's kinda vague. Names aren't mentioned and characters aren't drawn well enough for you to recognize them so maybe it'll be okay.

EDIT: It's actually kinda NSFW.

Wow, Dale. It's been so long. I was beginning to think you'd never make another comic!

dalebert

Well, you know, I said I wasn't going to get on any kind of regular schedule again but that if I got inspired enough I might go ahead and make one for fun, and that my style would probably change and become much simpler. Yada yada.

I was a little taken a back at first, then I ran away, but after thing about it for a while it's about how people get off on television violence.

So it's shoot first and fap second...................

I feel like it's lost on a lot of people, but as a libertarian, I'm acutely aware that all the horrible things that are happening in Breaking Bad are either directly or indirectly a result of the drug war. Hank represents that side as a DEA agent so I always see him as the bad guy. He's VERY willing to use violence to accomplish his objectives, just as Walt is. Neither of them is anywhere near being squeaky clean. Still I don't actually wish death on anyone, but this is fiction, it's a show where violence happens. It's a drama, after all. So no, I didn't want him to die but I really did want him to "lose" the battle.

Throughout the show, Walt has crossed more and more boundaries and it's no surprise that some folks who may have rooted for him at the start have changed sides and decided he had just gone too bad. But I can't help it. No matter how bad he gets, as the primary source of all the strife, Hank will always be worse in my eyes, and I'm not alone. I'm sure the fact that Walt is the protagonist has quite an impact on the viewers' feelings as well. You almost can't help but relate to him. We've been following along for this long struggle, full of hairline escapes.

So anyway, comedy is dark. The darker the subject, the funnier it is. In that sense, rape, violence, death, and so on--these will always be hilarious as long as the situation is fictional and real people aren't actually getting hurt. This comic was just an exaggeration of how hardcore #TeamWalt some folks are, those of us who are still rooting for Walt to succeed in some fashion, or at least to not go down in flames. #TeamHank was about to win (icon for the drug war), and unfortunately, the only way Walt was going to escape was for Hank to die, so I didn't mourn him much. It was even satisfying on a certain level, per the narrative as presented. Of course I didn't rewind and watch the scene over and over whilst masturbating, but it's way funnier that way BECAUSE IT'S SUPER DARK! :)

And now you've made me explain the joke, thereby ruining it. ;)

Probably one of the best series ever created for TV. I'm still impressed that they went with such a bold storyline.

Walt's descent is an interesting study... survival choices... surviving the forces of prohibitionists and the gangs their policies cause to come about. Then his ego, greed and over compensation.

Brian Cranston is an excellent actor.

I'm pleased that the series is taking a deliberate story arc and not just going on till it peters out.

Sure, but you've distilled it down to it's essence, which is, people are getting off on the violence.

I'd say I distilled it down further than that. At it's essence, it's about people rooting for a team and being glad when their team wins, or at least when their team scores a goal. Violence may or may not be part of that. It's not as simple as getting off on violence. Otherwise, we wouldn't care who dies. The formula for a dramatic narrative is about making us care about someone or making us hate someone so that it either triggers empathy and mourning or a sense of justice served. Not saying it isn't fucked up. It is. But it's also cathartic.

I'm laying down the law, that I just made up, which is; You can't distill something down further by adding to it.

I've compared sports team loyalty to political affiliation for years now. For many, it's "I'm a Baptist 'cuz my Daddy was a Baptist and his Daddy before him..."

For those of my parents' generation, where and when they were born, "Democrat" was practically stamped on their birth certificates, and was as immutable as gender and eye color.

And with politics, violence is definitely a part of that, whether people realize it or not.

My Uncle and Aunt were old school Dixiecrat democrats... it was amazing the logical hoops they would jump through to remain OK with the modern democratic party. I mean they were states rights southerners, definitely social conservatives... but that old loyalty made them hold their nose and pull the D lever.

The thread feels derailed.

I think I might understand wherein lies the confusion. Who here has actually been keeping up with the show? Because it's sort of an inside joke.

Jim Johnson

I'm sorry, I was unaware that this thread had a prerequisite.

I'm going back to real life... and put up some more wall board.

I guess I could listen to the show through some head phones, that require an MP3 player, that I don't have, that Id be taking off every couple of minutes, but that might really cut into the 3,000,000 hours of Stef's program that I'm behind on and the three hours nightly of FTL, not to mention ALP and Puke and the Gang and those two guys from New York, so maybe I missed the episode of FF where there was an inside joke.

Not to mention that I don't listen to podcasts because there is already a lot of strange things going on inside my head; mainly gears and chains that do whimsical things.
