Was delayed by what I think may be their one-letter-per month rule....

(You are welcome to print this, if you like)

Dear editors at the Union Leader:

As you may be aware, dramatic events unfolded in Nashua on March 20.  The entire police department seemed to converge on Amherst and Main, sirens blazing, when a crowd objected to their arrest of one man on marijuana charges and another for blocking the cruiser in protest.   But the event didn't occur in isolation. It is part of a long Western history of peaceful noncooperation.  One of the arrestees was slated just hours later to attend an award ceremony for the long-dead French philosopher who inspired her actions.  Étienne de la Boétie died in the 16th century but not before saying something Nashua PD should hear:

"I do not ask that you place hands upon the tyrant to topple him over, but simply that you support him no longer; then you will behold him, like a great Colossus whose pedestal has been pulled away, fall of his own weight and break in pieces."

Was delayed by what I think may be their one-letter-per month rule....

On March 20, dramatic scenes unfold in downtown Nashua.  A hundred marijuana rights activists gather to defy the pot laws, one openly lighting a two-foot bong.  Two undercover police move in, realize they are surrounded by a screaming crowd, and suddenly the entire town looks up to the sound of sirens.

From every corner of the vibrant, rebellious city they come...K9's with barking arm-chewers, vans, cruisers...a dozen machines in all.  The original attempt to arrest a 17-year-old smoker named Lewis...does not go according to plan.  Virtually the only black man in the crowd, his seizure triggers furious allegations of racial profiling.   Police wind up having to arrest one of his new acquaintances for blocking their cruiser, as well as an indie reporter from Missouri.

Her name is Catherine Bleish.  The event she was planning on attending that night goes on with her in a cell...and on the minds of her many compatriots.   It is an award ceremony at the New Hampshire Liberty Forum.  There, the long-dead liberty philosopher Étienne de la Boétie receives Freedom Book Club's "Book of the Year" award.   His 450-year-old quote reads as though it were written for this weekend's jailed - but peaceable - protesters. Maybe their tormentors should pay attention to it as well:

"I do not ask that you place hands upon the tyrant to topple him over, but simply that you support him no longer; then you will behold him, like a great Colossus whose pedestal has been pulled away, fall of his own weight and break in pieces."

New Hampshire's "Porcupine Fest" to rock Lancaster this June

Guns, games and government-free weddings are expected to be among the highlights as Earth's most successful liberty movement gathers at a New Hampshire campground this June.

Porcupine Freedom Fest (http://Porcfest.com) is a now-legendary annual meetup of "Free Staters," people who pledge they will move to New Hampshire for more liberty.

Over ten thousand of these freedom activists are pledged to make the migration, and hundreds of them show up every summer for the event.  This year, like most years, they're holding it at the breathtaking Rogers Campground in Lancaster.

Each "liberty summer," they conduct concerts, hold activism workshops reminiscent of the civil rights era, and openly wear enough firearms to give the entire state of Massachusetts a coronary.

But this isn't the Bay State. It's the Live Free or Die State, the place where the dimming lights of American liberty still shine brightest.  And there is no better opportunity to experience new hampshire's liberty culture on full display.

Right-wing and left-wing causes merge as gay dance parties rage side-by-side with evangelical homeschoolers and Republican speechifying.  Raves, drug-loving hippies and shooting range expeditionists all seem to be on the same side at this week-long event...where activists tend to divide on only one question: Whether to even bother with traditional politics.

Officially scheduled events include speeches by 2004 presidential nominee Michael Badnarik, Stefan Molyneux of Freedomain Radio and legal-system guru Marc Stevens of Adventures in Legal Land

There's Buzz's Big Gay Dance Party, presumably a good deal of straight dancing too, sporting events, a water-slide and another item you probably won't want to miss, "The Love Shack's Sexy Antebellum Calendar Shoot."

But if past Porcupine Fests are any indication, the event will be more kid-friendly than you might think.  It's usually the time and place a freedom-family looks forward to more than any other.

Sending this as letter to editor... to the Laconia Citizen

letters@citizen.com

Dear folks at The Citizen:

This is an invitation for your readers, to a curious event.  From June 24-27, cultural forces normally assumed to be at odds....will mingle for common purpose in northern New Hampshire.

That's when the Free State Project holds its annual "Porcupine Festival" at Lancaster.

Equally welcome and always present at this lively gathering are evangelical homeschoolers, gay dance parties, guns, hippies and even the occasional politician. It is a weekend for the truly tolerant, all gathered for the common purpose of downsizing America's growing Police State.

Last year's event was marked by rock concerts, raves and activism training reminiscent of the civil rights era.  It saw attendance of over 500 people.   This year's shindig is expected to be bigger.  Ten thousand freedom activists are essentially pledged to move to the Live Free or Die state, many have already made it here.   This is your chance to meet some of them and see what the fuss is all about. Details are on their website:  PorcFest.com

New Hampshire now rated "hostile" to homeschoolers

New Hampshire Liberty Alliance members are discussing this in detail over at

http://forum.nhliberty.org/index.php?topic=3020.0

But the gist is that the last four years have seen a lot of attempts to add regulations to homeschoolers.   These have failed in the state house, so officials have resorted to using the bureaucracy directly as a means of imposing the new burdens.

That has led the Home School Legal Defense Association to classify NH as one of the six most anti-homeschooling states.

On the other hand, the homeschooling movement in the state is robust and on one occasion turned out around a thousand unhappy citizens to oppose one of the bills.   There are indications that some of the key regulation-backers may have failed to file for re-election.

Since many of the NH centric web forums (other than ours) have disappeared... I've started posting NH centric  liberty messages to the NH newspaper websites instead.

I will start tracking them here the way I used to just track my web forum messages.

Posted to an article at UnionLeader.com:

@ Don J.

I understand Eisenhower grew the government less than any other president in his time.

As for today...
The Overton movers who oppose big government conventional wisdom.....are all over the state.   That is not exactly the same as being right-wing, but right-wing or not they are moving the boundaries of what is mainstream.  You can debate them right now on NHLiberty.org's forum.

It's heroin from the Fed pushers
By Dave Ridley - 06/19/2010 - 2:15 pm New
Accepting stimulus money is arguably wrong; it's receiving stolen property...and it will make New Hampshire dependent.
To fight the "Fed heroin habit" I suppose you could join the New Hampshire Tea Parties or better yet the more consistent New Hampshire Liberty Alliance.
I think I heard that one of the towns near Grafton rejected some of the stimulus money too.

Updated 6/20:  Both of the messages made it past the moderators and appeared on the papers' websites.  However I might have gotten more views if I responded to topics that were hotter, or newer.  Both of these were about a day and a half old I think.

If you want to strike back at the state govt for raising the fees, one way would be to locate a couple of the most anti-gun voting records and back their opponents in some way.

Here's one way to track voting records, using the New Hampshire Liberty Alliance resources:

http://www.nhliberty.org/2009_liberty_rating

The ones with the lowest ratings here are almost always the anti-gun people too.

I'm sure GO-NH has records as well.

NH: Help word the new sovereignty resolution

State Rep Dan Itse of the New Hampshire Liberty Alliance is requesting feedback regarding the wording of his next sovereignty resolution.  Sovereignty resolutions, essentially, urge Washington not to meddle in New Hampshire's affairs:

http://forum.nhliberty.org/index.php?topic=3058.0

My hope generally for these sorts of things is that they get worded in a manner that appeals to Democrats, and that they trigger the publicity to take them to the next level. Itse's last such resolution, HCR 6, did fine on publicity but failed to win over a large enough number of Democrats to pass the House.   In theory, Concord's supremacy over Washington on most state affairs....should be an issue of agreement for all ideologies.

But what are your thoughts on this; is a resolution worthwhile?  Is state sovereignty and increased independence from Washington important to you or do you dislike the idea?

Help word the "New Hampshire Sovereignty" resolution

Some of you may remember HCR 6, a New Hampshire state house bill that sent hundreds of demonstrators into a supportive frenzy outside the capitol building last year.  It was a "sovereignty resolution" designed to send a message to Washington:  Federals should not meddle so much in New Hampshire's internal affairs.

Next year, a similar bill is expected to come up.  But this time the "Father of HCR 6," state rep Dan Itse, is apparently asking for broader feedback on the wording before he submits it.  There is a discussion of the wording underway on the New Hampshire Liberty Alliance web forum, or you can contact Itse directly through gencourt.state.nh.us.

I am hoping Itse gets that feedback, especially from Democrats, and that he acts on it.  Liberals, libertarians and conservatives can come together on this issue which should unite all New Hampshirites.  On most matters, we should have control over our own destiny; Washington's bureaucrats should not.

Time-sensitive: NHLiberty.org needs your complaining skills!

The New Hampshire Liberty Alliance "legislative report card" comes out around Sunday, July 11th.  It rates the voting records of all NH state reps and senators.  The most libertarian get A's and the most authoritarian get F's and CT's.

If you're up for it and in-state, the Alliance requests that you contact your reps who did well - and badly.  Thank the good ones; gently take issue with the bad ones.  This follow-up will help boost the report card's profile among legislators.

Legislative report cards appear here:
http://www.nhliberty.org/liberty_rating
The 2010 version should be up around July 11, but you can always contact a rep to talk about last year's version.

To reach your reps and discuss their grade, head here:
