There are no fees for using the web implementation and I don't think there will be any for setting up the software on your own server.  No package has been released yet, but when it is, the download link will be at http://sourceforge.net/projects/ripple/

I thought it was going to be peer-to-peer. Why does one need a server?

Russell Kanning

Only if you wanted to set up your own. I don't see why any of us would want that.

As it stands now, the privacy is pretty loose.  The sign-in does not appear to be secure, and email notification of every transaction goes across as clear text.

Although the ripple protocol (when it goes p2p) will not needlessly spew information to just any peer, I'd feel safer if the owner of the server I'm connecting to is either myself or someone I trust.  Imagine this thing fully behind SSL and being able to turn off email notification.  It would be a totally convenient and private way to trade value among friends.  I hope it doesn't get squashed before I can get it set up the way I want.  If it becomes too common it will get squashed, or regulated heavily like Paypal.  Incidentally, Ripple is very close to what the developers of Paypal originally intended.. for currency to transcend governments.

EDIT: about the software itself.. Ryan is letting me browse the developer site.  I will put in a few request tickets for privacy enhancements while learning more about it.. and will start making connections at ripplepay in the meantime.

One of the guys here gave me $100 credit on the system and I don't even know him. I will have to go spend it before he wises up.  :iroc: :read2:

Actually it is good to see the connections taking place on this network. We can use this system any way we choose. It just seems to me to be a good base that we can build any number of arrangements.

So, I've already replied to one person here.  Can you reply to more than one?  They are offering quite a bit in credit.

Try it and see. What debt are you willing to take on?

Update:
Well it looks like the board got rolled back. But anyway, Ryan already implemented SSL.  https://ripplepay.com/
You have to accept the web certificate.  Optional e-mails coming down the pike too..

Cool ... I really like the way this is working.

I posted over in Business & Networking some of the things Ryan is considering for the ripple system:

I will relay any comments (in either thread) directly to him.

Bump.   Ryan has released a Ripple package.  It is at http://sourceforge.net/projects/ripple/  The package is currently for stand-alone implementations only.   Dependencies include Python, Django, PostgreSQL (or mySQL database) and Apache.  The e-gold and paypal integration will have to wait until the P2P protocol is done. Ryan Fugger wants this thing to be as solid as possible and on P2P before integrating something like Paypal, because he believes that will cause Ripple's popularity to increase dramatically.  But someone computer-savvy enough (moreso than me) could, at this point, run a stand-alone system and add whatever they want.  I'll be tinkering with it myself, though the learning curve is a bit steep..
