I grew up in this town. I know that library very well.

BTW I love the library.  If it is funded by a town.... then why should people have a problem with it.... each town decides how much they want to spend.  Sounds like local control to me.
I love the library.  My town in NH has a great one.  But I did sit down and help fight that their budget was too big.

You know .... "local control" can also lead to New London vs Kelo. :(

But really Lloyd .... if the BATF was about to break down your door and the local sheriff stopped them ....  wouldn't you be happy?

Eli

Precisely, it's a matter of scale and appropriate action.  In context the librarians actions were laudable, and in the face of amoral men with guns,  even heroic.

The federal government doesn't own the local library.  Do we not stand for state sovereignty?  What good are laws and procedures if you only follow them when they are convenient?

So you don't think different branches of the government should be allowed access to information the other has????

Well there you go... vote for Clinton again!  He set up just such a reality and that's why the federal government failed to comunicate prior to 9-11 and look where that got us!

Different branches does not mean local library and the FBI.
It means Exec, Jud, and Leg.

If CIA and NSA and FBI shared info that is their business.

I am amazed by how many people think that it is ok that the Feds are doing listening to phone calls.  Many people tell me it is 'for my protection'.

Well now your jumping topics... we're talking about government owned public computers in a library.

But as a side question, do you feel the CIA should have the right to spy on suspected terrorists OUTSIDE this country without having to run back to the US for a court order or anything like that?

But it is local govt that owns the computers not the Feds.
If the feds own them then ok.

1.  Never trust the CIA.
2.  If they spy on non US citizens outside the US.. I am not too concerned.
3.  If they spy on US citizens they should get a warrant (4th Amend).

I think the 4th Amend says "people", not US citizens.

Well, Brandeis really got a bomb threat.  And, it really came from that library.  The email from the library was all they had to help them find the sender, possibly apprehend them and, maybe find out if there really is a bomb and where it might be.  I am using the presence tense on purpose, as there still might be a bomb.
What would you have them do?

Dreepa

1.  You are sure that it came from the library?  Proof?

So if the govt wants to seize computers all over the country we should do it because there might be a bomb.

Why couldn't the gov get a warrant first what is the big deal if they are in the 'right'?

Eli

Who are you podperson, and what have you done with LLoyd?  You really buying into this ticking time bomb argument?  Or that anyone should believe in the good intentions of an FBI agent without a warrant?  Those assholes are dangerous enough with the oversight of someone charged with safeguarding our rights.  I think they should have rousted a judge and got him to sign a warrant.  As they did.

Plus she was following the local law.  How is she supposed to know that the Feds can do that?

Those agencies are what is killing us.
