Interesting.

Thanks for the info.

I've never noticed a large price difference on consumer goods here than anywhere else. I moved from Northeastern CT for the record.

Some places are a lot cheaper, in fact. Maybe because the upper connecticut river valley is a depressed area, but prices are low.

We came from a very low cost of living area - SC. Besides housing the only significant difference I have noticed is groceries. I spend the same $40 a week as before, but here I can't fit fish, shrimp, asparagus, and lamb into it as I could before.

Gotta be careful with those requests for the iron-handed moderation on this forum.   :icon_pirat:

NC2NH

During my first two weeks in NH, I've shopped at several Wal-Mart stores. Most items have cost the same or less than what I paid at Wal-Mart locations in NC. Of course, I've enjoyed not paying 7% sales tax*

I have noticed that prices tend to be higher on some items at Wal-Mart stores along the MA border (Salem, Hudson). However, the best prices I've found have been at the Amherst store.

Did I mention I enjoy shopping at Wal-Mart? :)

*2% on certain grocery items. I can't figure out why the NC sales tax on candy is 2% while a 12-pack of Diet Pepsi is 7%.

welcome to the vagaries of "uniform sales tax"  NJ recently adopted it and it screwed everyone up. Food with flour in it isn't taxed under the "uniform" tax so in NJ, you have to pay sales tax on the Hershies bar, but not on the Nestle Crunch.

Goods are more expensive near the border because they can get away with it because all the Massachussettanites cross the border to buy their stuff tax free.  MA people still pay less than they do total in MA, the store keepers make more money, and the NH people who live there, if their upset, can just travel a little further north to get better prices.  As for the MA shopkeeperrs loosing sales, well, maybe they'll learn their lesson and leave for NH!

We get the same issue here with Delaware.  Pretty much everyone in Salem County, NJ does most of their shopping in DE
