We came from a very low cost of living area - SC. Besides housing the only significant difference I have noticed is groceries. I spend the same $40 a week as before, but here I can't fit fish, shrimp, asparagus, and lamb into it as I could before.

Catleen

Shrimp is very cheap.  Buy small frozen shrimp at Wal-mart.

I don't spend more than $2 a pound for meat. That's how I feed 2 of us for $40 a week. On sale, I can get beef, chicken, and pork for that. And there is canned salmon, of course.

We avoid WalMart and don't shop at grocery stores with shopper cards. You have to get creative when it is important to live your principles. Gosh, if I felt pesticides or eating meat were evil, we would be up a creek.

I am really getting a kick out of a young bachelor like Keith giving grocery tips to Cathleen. :walk:

Why do you avoid Wal-mart?  It doesn't have a shopper card.

BTW, canned sardines are healthier than salmon or chicken and are cheaper.

cathleeninnh

You are probably right about sardines, just not very versatile. Have any recipes to share?

There's sardine-peanut butter sandwiches.

Next time you come visit, I will make you one!

I eat them on salad, with saltine crackers and salsa, and by dipping them in mustard.

cathleeninnh

Hadn't thought of salsa. That might be good. How about with scrambled eggs like kippers?

I'll stick with the shrimp, thanks.  ;D

Not crazy about sardines, but, I discovered a recipe for no-frills chili that goes together fast, makes a lot and can be cheap if you buy the canned stuff and ground turkey when on sale and stock up.  I call it: 'My appologies to Ward Chilli'

1 pound ground turkey.
1 can (14 oz) Mex style (or any) Diced tomatoes.
1 can (15oz) Black Beans, rinsed and drained.
1 can (14oz) Whole kernel corn, drained.
1 package (1 & 1/2 oz) dried chili mix.
1/4 cup water.

In a skillet, brown turkey on medium high heat, add everything else, cook over low heat for 10 minutes.

I pour it on rice.  I found it salty, so I rinsed the corn, and I have used low salt tomatoes, but, not always.  Also, last time I made it, I sauteed some garlic and onions and added them.  It made it even better, but, added to the prep time.
